Question Memory Expansion Confusion

I am confused about memory expansion when using the Palm OS format. First a littla history. I come from using the Pocket PC format for a few years so as far as memory expansion goes, it was pretty simple. When you load a program, no matter how large, I was prompted at installation "Do you want to intall on the PDA's memory or the CF card?" Operation wise, it was seamless. The icon was present on my menu, I click on it and it opened up. Not much difference in speed wether it was on the CARD or the PDAs RAM. Im trying to come back to the Palm OS better battery life and better overall funtional system and programs.
Now comes the confusion part, as I read about the diffferent PDAs (Sony, Palm, or Handspring) they each seem to operate a little differently regarding using memory expansion. My question is can the Visor access the programs stored on the CF cards seamlessly or does it always transfer it to RAM first? Does it matter, speed wise, if I would use a Flash expansion pack as oppseed to Mem Plug w/CF? Do I hav to have different software loaded if programs are older and dont support VFS or will they just not work? Sorry for the long post but im having a hard time understanding it all. I just want to see an icon on the screen, tap on it and have the program run, with out significant delays. How does the Pocket PC do this, and why is the memory expansion on the PALM OS seem more involved?

You might want to check out www.launchplug.com. They have several tutorials and comparisons to help.

It is really not too complicated, except for the detail that there are several ways to accomplish what you want, and each method has its own place in the scheme of things!
