Question Handpring and Palm Hotsyncing???

Hi,
My spouse is thinking about getting a palm device, but is thinking about getting the kyocera phone to go with sprint service. My question is...

I already have a Handspring that I am syncing to my computer/Outlook. If we add another palm device that is not using the Handspring Palm Desktop, but the regular Palm desktop will it cause problems? Is it possible to run both on the same computer?

Can someone give me advice with this?

Thanks,
Michael

A little help from a Fellow 'Cane ( '91 MS-Management of Technology).

GO here: http://support.handspring.com/esupp...esType=RESEARCH

this link should provide all the help you need.

Thanks for the link

I need to temporarily have a deluxe and a palm going at the same time with the same user name (don't ask) can I have both a handspring and palm version of desktop installed on the same computer?

installation

Both version Palm or handspring are two different version of same software. You cannot install same software two times on one computer. But in windows XP that is kind of possible. You have to use two different user login for windows (two user name).

USB Drivers - differ by manufacturer

The only difference in Palm Desktop installs is usually the HotSync Manager. The HotSync Manager contains the USB driver for the device - Palm uses Palmusbd.sys and Handspring uses visorusb.sys. Palms version will work with Visors and Treos but is flaky with large conduits like Eyemodule and AvantGo. I don't recommend it.

PS Sony has a slightly different version from everyone as they dont use PocketMirror - I am not sure if they have their own USB driver.

I think the most reliable way to have multiple manufacturer Palm devices HotSyncing from one PC is to use the USB cradle for one device with that companies software. Then setup a serial cradle or IR hotsync with the second device. The serial and infrared stuff is universal while the USB stuff is not. This works for me and it prevents you getting into support hell. Believe me - no ne supports you when you ask them about mixing two manufacturers software and hardware.

Thanks for the clarification. Do you how it works in the other direction - syncing a Palm branded unit with Handspring's version of desktop. I only need to do it for a shorttime - don't want to install and unistall if I don't have to - I have things like DayNotez and Splashdata working fine from the desktop. I also don't have access to a serial cradle and IR isn't an option.

I may just have to bite the bullet for a couple of weeks. Thanks for any additional info you might have.

Cool thanks!

Thanks for the information from everyone. Thanks especially to the Cane. We love our alums.

I think that I may avoid any problems by not purchasing a non-Handspring PDA.

Instead of the Kyocera phone for sprint, I think I'll convince my better half in either going to a Treo or getting the Digital Link for Sprint.
