Backup Folder

Agghh the unspeakable has happened - whilst changing my batteries last night my Visor crashed and i was forced into performing a hard reset!

Being a new PDA user this was the first time this has happened, luckly i had hotsynced earlier so i was able to recover my data. What happened though is certain applications that i had deleted before reinstalled themselves and i got back a lot of my databases without the programs. I reinstalled and deleted what was necessary and everything is ok.

I found out that this is because of the backup folder. Does this mean that i can put all my program files in there and next time i have to hard reset they will be reinstalled?

Can you tell me what exactly the back-up folder does and what i can use it for, if i can use it.

There are two folders that determine what applications and databases get reinstalled.

One is the Backup Folder. Everything in this folder is a backup of the device at last HotSync. All of this should be restored should you perform a HardReset and sync the device.

The other folder is the Archive Folder. Almost everything you have deleted gets moved into this folder, just in case you decide you need it. If I am absolutely certain that I no longer need something, I manually delete the contents of this folder. It is this folder that more than likely restored the data you had previously deleted.

There are also other folders that contain the DB's for your PalmOS PIM applications and those are Datebook, Address, ETC.

The problem is that although all of my records and PDB files were restored the programs themselves were not.

Does this mean i could add to my backup folder all of the program PRC files and they would be reinstalled too?

I found the answer to my question!

When you hotsync only the 3rd party applications that have a certain bacup option turned on will back themselves up. This means that those that don't when a hard reset is performed they will not be reinstalled.

Thus backup buddy or the like comes in and takes care of backing up these files for you.

BTW for those of you that are cheap and do not want to pay for backup buddy I have found an amazing program that does it for free and is very useful. Grab it from palmgear http://www.palmgear.com/software/sh...amp;prodID=3994
