Well, November has come and gone and no Visorphone availability yet. There were some stories suggesting this springboard might be out by the end of November (as the springboard modules section of this web site shows), but that turns out to be a bit optimistic. Handspring's FAQ suggests the end of the year - anyone have dates more definitive than these?

I received an email from Handspring about 3 weeks ago saying before year end??
I am guessing if it is true they would not want to miss the xmas selling entirely?
So Soon I hope!

Talking visorphone

yahoo, it's a visorphone. check it out on ebay. only prob-$4,000 plus. still, this means it's coming.... think of it, no more looking up phone numbers with visor on one hand, then using other hand to push buttons, no wait, i forgot the number, look at visor again, oh no, it shut off, turn back on, get number, get back to phone, now it's off, look out there's a red light ahhhhhhh!
actually, i have been looking for a 3rd party app that would create the dial tone sounds on my visor when held up to the receiver but was always informed that the sound quality would not allow for this.

Sigh! Probably not. If they aren't shipping them by 15 December, mail delivery will probably not make it by Christmas ('cept maybe FedEx). Dec 15 is 1 week away, not a "few weeks."

Exclamation Visorphone due on 12/18/2000

On Sunday night 12/3/2000, I saw a news piece on KTVU Fox Channel 2, Oakland, CA, that said very specifically that "...the VisorPhone will be released one week before Christmas. But it will only be available from Handspring's Web site."

If you believe TV news (I usually don't) then Monday 12/18/2000 is the date. Still kind of late for Christmas.

Guessing December 20th... With a mad FedEx scramble!
Come on guys, I want my MTV cough er, um, VisorPhone!

IMHO: They are missing the $$$boat by delaying this far into the holiday shopping season. I would however like a working product, so a few delays won't kill me.

Lightbulb

why the wait?

1. maybe they want to NOT repeat some of the service problems that cropped up with visor was first rushed out (although I had no problems ordering mine about three months after launch)

2. maybe it's not really ready by xmas, but by building the hype they entice us to NOT buy a competitive product this holiday (hey, marketing makes the world go 'round)

Good point Kouba. I was simply hoping Jeff Hawkins and company were a bit above that sort of cheap activity, but I suppose that's the way things are.

At least by the time Visor Phone comes out I will have other alternative choices it appears.

i've held off buying any wireless modems in hopes that the visorPhone gives me the double-value... if it does, i'll be glad they hyped it. if it doesn't, i'll be ticked... guess they're confident :-)

Visorphone and wireless modem

I would go with Omnisky/yada yada or go america for wireless data access. Visorphone doesn't look like it's strength is wireless data, especially since GSM networks are limited to 9600 bps data access. Device that does wireless voice and data will be a killer device, but just isn't here yet.

SG,

I've done the wireless access through Go America - two times now (WinCE and Palm). I found the connection throughput to average about 9600 baud on a good day (not including the numerous areas/times I could not get connected). The 19.2K advertised is pretty much a myth in my experience (DC Metro area - fairly mainstream location). This round with the visor I didn't even glance in the direction of Minstrel.

For the occasional email check, I'm looking forward to the all-in-one approach of the Visorphone concept. However, I agree that for web surfing/clipping or AvantGOing, GSM will probably be too underpowered.
