Unhappy Yada Yada changes?!?! Roaming charges

Hi all-

Just a heads up. I received a polite call from Yada Yada last week informing me that they will begin to charge for roaming beginning next month. They told me that my roaming charges for the previous month (had they been charging) would've totaled over $200! And that was only 6 days sporadic use in August! I hardly use my modem at all. I pretty much only use it when I travel so, it has become not worth it for me and I canceled. They very politely complied with my request.

Note- according to the rep, they didn't call everybody on this issue. Keep you eyes open and watch your roaming... but if you're like me, that's why you signed up to begin with... no roaming charges.

I'd love to hear if others have experienced the same.

Glad I cancelled earlier this month. I am going to training in
November for 2 weeks and would have racked up a ****-load of charges!
That is just ridiculous. Now I am really happy with my Thinmodem!

I didn't get a call from YY, probably because I don't roam much. Did they give you details about the roaming?

YY's website doesn't mention anything about this.

I've liked my YY service over the past year, but I'm getting worried that they may be going out of business sometime because of the market conditions and competition. Are there any other reliable ways to wirelessly access the Internet on the Visor, like Visorphone?

Unfortunately, I got no details at all from them. They said they called me because I was a "heavy user".... but, that cannot possibly be true. I rarely use it at all. All of this was too odd for me and I could just see being charged for all kinds of things that I have no control over. I am sure YY is feeling the crunch.

I always had good service with YY. No real problems at all. The staff was helpful too.

YadaYada

I, too, signed up with YY last November and my contract is up for renewal. I have had good support from YY (especially from Eric Nix). I noticed that ATT offers a similar service for approx. $30/month. I am looking into that. I have not been contacted about the roaming charges either.

Are you planing on renewing with YY or another carrier?

I have been mulling over getting the Visorphone. It's more versatile in that you can check Internet/e-mail and use it as a phone. I've not used my YY as much as I thought I would be, and my contract ends in December. Have you guys ever thought of getting the Visorphone?

I think they're trying to eliminate consumer customers and serve only businesses. Unfortunately, they're not reliable enough to serve business purposes and don't have nearly the necessary range.

I'm saving big bucks since I dumped YY and instead spent $40 (what I'd pay YY in a single month!) on a cable to connect my cell phone to my Prism. Now I just pay my regular phone bill, my regular ISP bill, and that's it.

Thanks--
Jay

I also left YY a while ago. I now connect my prism to
my samsung 8500 (SprintPCS) phone using a cable I ordered
from markspace.

What you meant is that you connect your Visor to your cell phone with a cable. Then you dial in to your ISP to connect to the internet?

I got one from thesupplynet.com. I just matched my PDA type with my cell phone type to find the right one.

They were extremely helpful, and when I called with a really dumb question, they answered the phone immediately, the person I spoke to then tried to help me but wasn't sure, so she passed me to someone else who also answered immediately and gave me my answer. Quite an improvement over waiting an hour for YY's answering service to get around to me and then never getting an call-back!

The cable arrived faster than I expected, and I was up and running in minutes.

Can't say enough good things about thesupplynet.com.

Yes. There are some threads on this floating around, but it's simple:

Add a new connection under Pref/Network on the pda (instructions come w/cable, it takes 10 seconds)
Connect phone to pda with cable
Surf!

Your ISP's number goes in the PDA. Then you just go to Prefs/NW, and select the connection you want (Earthlink, AOL, whatever) in order to get online.

FASTER by FAR than YY. It used to take me several minutes to download my email, now it takes seconds.

If you have Sprint, you'll need to pay $5/month for unlimited wireless web, and you're using your minutes when you're online. If you have AT&T, I think it's just minutes that you use, no extra fee. I'm not sure about Verizon, but like I said, there are threads floating around on VC about the specifics of each provider. Just do a search in the discussion groups on your provider's name.

Good luck!

Exclamation One word of warning....

AOL will not work. It must be an ISP that uses standard PPP.

Actually, you don't have to dial up your ISP if you're on SprintPCS. The $5/mo. wireless web option allows you to use SprintPCS as your ISP. I've got a SupplyNet cable, Platinum, Sanyo 4500 and SprintPCS. The only "connection" to my ISP with this combo is that I can get (and send) my ISP e-mail using MultiMailPro through the SprintPCS connection.

I thought that using Sprint PCS for as the ISP limited me to web clipping sites. That's not so?

Thanks!

Nope, not limited. I use Blazer and visit all kinds of sites. And actually, while many of them are wireless-optimized, few of them are PQAs (which I access with JPMobile's Surewave Browser).
