i was thinking about getting the total recall voice recorder and wanted to know how far away can you be before the microphone stops 'hearing' you? also if you satisfied with this voice recorder.

I can say only one thing - this is piece of ****. It's fully useless: only 17 min record time, no way to download records to visor memory, no way to update software on the module. 'medium quality' is full of noise and metallic sounds, so it's useless on meetings or so. And they have very good advise if 17 min is not enough : "However, since the recordings are stored on the Total Recall (not the Visor), you can double your recording space by using a second Total Recall Digital Voice Recorder." Isn't it good idea ???. I think standalone voice recorder like olympus is the best solution....

i bought one and used it for a week and then brought it back. i found it to be poorly designed--the software sucks as does the interface. the quality is substandard. i would avoid the module if i were you.

yes we are talking about the targus total recall voice recorder, or at least i am. do you think this is the best voice recording modual out there?

Though I don't own one, I recall reading that the amount of actual recording time varies depending on the quality setting. This would account for the 90 minute/17 minute discrepancy.

Maybe this thread's gone a little stale, but I posted a wanted to buy/trade post on the marketplace. I've been thinking about getting one myself, but with all the dust in here, I'm getting a little shy.

If you posters (or others) would be willing, I'd like to give one a test drive. You know - like the kind you can do at a Best Buy store, except they actually have the module you want to try.

I propose this: I send you the cost of shipping (USPS 2-3 day) and a deposit, you let me try it for a week, and if I like it I'll send the rest of a pre-agreed price, else I take the hit for the return shipping and you can send the deposit back. Everything cash or MO.

Realizing of course that you don't know me from Adam, I can only prommise you that I'm honest and solvent enough to not be ripping you off. I'll include my business card and I'm giving you my home address; I'm in the book.

I figure it's a way to possibly rid yourself of unwanted hardware, but with a safety net. If you're interested, let me know through this thread or by email ([email protected]).

How about this: we agree on a price, you pay the full price + shipping
and I keep the money for 2 weeks. If you don't like it in 2 weeks, I'll return the money when the module is returned. Sound like a deal?

I have dealt with a few people on this board selling products I make.
I'm reputable and honest, too.

I bought one thinking I would use it a lot. I had a voice recorder a
few years ago that I used quite a bit. I just don't use this one. It's
about 4 months old and used less than 15 mins, total. The sound quality is good when using the highest sampling rate (least record time).

total recall problems

I am having trouble with the recorder part of the total recall. The playback works fine but when i push to record, nothing happens. Even fresh batteries do nothing. Thanks in advance for any help.

Not to requote the directions, but I'll tell you in steps that I take to get a recording:

1. If you haven't already, insert the TR module. As soon as you insert it, you should be taken to the app category that now "owns" the TotalRecall app (the icon looks something like a microphone).
2. Tap the TR app icon to start it. You'll get something that looks vaguely like a simplified To Do list (the interface part that I like least, BTW).
3. Tap the New button, and watch for the red LED on the module (to the right of the Targus logo) to light up.
4. When you see the light go on, the app interface will change to a more familiar "audio control" display. You can now start talking.
5. To finish, tap the Done button. You will return to the To Do list interface.

At what point in that list did you see or notice it fail? (BTW, the test I just performed was at 38% battery capacity on standard alkalines in a Visor Deluxe.)

Thanks Dave for your response. When i tapped NEW a screen came up saying DSP memory full. I don't really want to erase the recordings i have on the recorder but am having trouble transferring those recordings to my computer. I assume that if i get those recordings off the recorder I will then be able to record.?

I've quit using my Visor Platinum. I'm always with my Dell notebook wherever I go, so I've been carrying my Visor around a lot less. Anyway, my Targus is now just sitting next to my PC at home, so I'm gonna get sell it.

Hey Tim:

First, sorry about the delay in getting back to you - long camping weekend. Anyway, have you installed the TR Desktop software, which will let you transfer the recordings out of the module?

One thing I can tell you is that it does not work under Windows NT (tried it and failed; even says so on the package).

I just installed Windows 2000 on my home machine, so I hope to install the desktop software as soon as I can.

Thanks Dave, it is working fine on my home computer, i simply had to delete some old recordings. On my computer at work i can load the software but it won't open. I suspect it has something to do with their network setup. Thanks again for the help.

Hmmm, it sounds like several people are disappointed in the voice recorders overall.

If anyone wants to sell one cheap, I could sure use it at work in our equipment lab!

In the next week, our newspaper should be posting a review on the Targus Total Recall Voice Recorder. Basically, a 3rd year medical student took it with him out to the wards to see how he liked having a voice recorder. The feedback has actually been very positive about everything (except for the price--we are poor students). He loved the portability and ease of use.
