Memplug question

How do you install a program on to your Prism that you put on a compact flash card? Do you just insert the card into the memplug then it would automatically install?

1. Hotsync the program normally that you want on the CF Card.
2. Use the "PiMover" program on the memplug to move it (not copy it) into the "Palm/pidirect" directory on your CF card.
3. Make sure that "Pidirect" in preferences is set to "enabled".

You can also copy over the .pdb files directly to the memory card from Windows using a card reader. Be advised that in general, you can only have programs, not databases on the card. Check www.memplug.com for more information. There Forums are quite helpful

Hmmm

It sounds like you already have a PalmOS application on the card. If that is the case, then you do not have to install anything on the organizer if you have VFS support. Virtual File System support allows you to run apps off of your memory cards. I have VFS on my FlashPlus adapter and VFS support with Launch'Em v3.5.1. I use them to run apps off of my 128MB compact flash card.

If you don't have VFS, you have to copy or move the app to the resident memory in order to run it.

VFS came with the upgrade to the FlashPlus module's firmware. I am not sure how it works with MemPlug.

I have PiDirect with my memplug, I just copy the PRC file to the flashmedia into the proper directory with my PC's card reader and pop it into the memplug, presto.. it shows up automagically on my Prism ready to go and not taking up any of the visors memory!!.. if you don't have PiDirect you could still do the same then use PiMover to manually copy the file into the visors memory..

Either way, no need to hotsync.. ever.. not even for backups.. (PiBackup 2)

FYI, you can have databases only on the memplug, so long as the application doesn't try to update it or write to it, (i.e. e-book pdb files) some programs like games require one or two files to be in the visors memory while the rest can be totally on the memplug. It will crash if it can't write to the database file.

Can I put my MapCompanion maps (.pdb) that came with my Magellan GPS Companion onto a SmartMedia card and use it with my Memplug? I understand that I cannot access all the maps on the card directly, but if I could use it for storage, then I could carry more maps with me, and swap files to RAM with PiMover, right?

Yes,

I essentially do the same thing with my GEODE.
