Cool

See www.MatchBookDrive.com for the newest low price. Software is included. Now you have no excuse to get one since a 128MB CF card is only around $75 at www.newegg.com and Amazon (you need to use a coupon and there is a $35 rebate to get this price at Amazon).

I should probably point out that folks purchasing under the new
pricing will *not* be entitled to free VFS support. Though they will
be able to participate in the beta program, they will have to purchase
the VFS software when it is finally released (and no, we don't yet
have any idea what it will cost). TANSTAAFL

So what has the response been from the people criticizing Pi for not giving away PiDirect?

The VFS support is still free to us those early buyers of Kopsis' software(if I remember it correctly, correct me if I am wrong). It's not free ONLY to those $15 CF adapter buyers. At $15 a piece with software ready to use, what could you complain about?
Everybody needs to pay to get PiDirect.

No, not EVERYONE needs to pay for PiDirect. Everyone who owns a MemPlug will get an unlimited version of PiDirect, but with limited functionality. For those who like what they see and the benefit it provides, a registration process will be put into effect for them to increase it's functionality. This seems to be exactly what Kopsis is offering. A limited beta of the product, with a process to pay for functionality. Enhanced funtionality usually requires enhanced pricing. Welcome to the digital age.

Hmm

Well, I already *have* a module that's capable of restoring my drivers - the handspring backup module. If I keep my data files on the the CF card, and just keep a good image of my current system - if I hose up, I just restore from the backup module, and the CF drivers are restored. I'm sold. Does anybody know if the short matchbook drivers are completely flush on the top? Or do they have the thumbnail cutout? There is so many adapters running around now, its hard to keep track of all the differences?!

Cheers!

adfleisher,
You are totally wrong. Have you read all Kopsis' announcements? Dave have said the FULL functional VFS support software will be FREE for us these early buyers. It's also very clear in his post said ONLY those new CF-adapter buyers(the cheap ones) need to pay for the new VFS software.
The function-limited version of PiDirect is only for a test. I doubt how useful will it be. Anyway, NOBODY will get the full functional PiDirect for free. Do not give your judgement before you read everything, OK? Welcome to the digital age.

They DO have a flush adapter available. It's $20 though.

No I'm not totally wrong. Previous people who bought the MatchBook adapter were paying SEPERATLY for the Kopsis software, they were just buying it from MatchBook rather than Kopsis directly, and at a discounted price. Thus, Kopsis already got paid for the software by those early adopters and is giving the VFS support for free. Do you really see a difference between giving VFS and paying for original software package and giving original software package for free and requesting payment for VFS? Seems like six of one and half a dossen of the other to me.

And secondly, as a beta testor of the PiDirect software I can tell you that the unregistered version is indeed a valid representation of the functionality of the software. The only things disabled are the ability to change the path that the OS thinks is physical memory, and the ability to have unlimited files accessed through that directory (as previously noted by PiDeveloper and the documentation on the Memplug website).

Maybe I'm not the one who should be better read on the topic before posting comment.

He's not "totally wrong." The restricted version of PiDirect will still be *free* and please keep in mind that a restricted version of PiDirect by itself will, for the forseeable future, have far greater utility than VFS support by itself. Apps will have to be written to take advantage of VFS, and developers seem slow to convert.

No matter PiDirect is free or not, it's totally useless for us these VDX users at least now and near future(or forever?). So it has NO "far greater utility" for me at all.
I am wondering what's the percentage of Memplug users using VDX.

Oh, geez, that's what happens when somebody who knows nothing on the subject puts up a post on its thread. I thought that was a typo. Whoops.

I really hate to discuss things like pricing and availablity for products that we don't even have yet, but I think I need to weigh in on this to clear up some of the confusion.

Like PiDirect, VFS is a seperate product from FAFileMover and the FlashAdapter driver library. And like PiDirect, not everyone needs it. A great many people have been using CF adapters without PiDirect or VFS for many months now and have found them very useful. Yes, the new technologies make all kinds of additional functionality possible, but that doesn't mean that everyone will find it useful enough to justify the additional expense.

What we're trying to do with Matchbook is realize our original goal for the entire FlashAdapter project - a dirt cheap way to use a CF card as to carry around more cool stuff than you can fit in your Visor. At the same time, we are trying to make upgrade paths available for users that are willing to spend more for additional capabilities. We don't want to offer a "one size fits all" solution. We want users to be able to chose what's right for them. PIT is doing the exact same thing by offering limited and full versions of PiDirect.

There are no "bad guys" here Choose the solution that best fits your needs and budget. It's a really big pond - there's room for more than one fish

Just for the record, I wasn't criticizing you with my comment.

I do not have a card reader to connect my CF card to my PC for file transfer. Will programs and databases that I hotsync to my Visor automatically write to the card? Or would I have to write to the RAM and then transfer to the card? I think the second one is right ... how cumbersome is that process? For $15 I may be willing to put up with the hassle! ;-)

Well its not a hassle really. Its really very straight forward and fast! I have about 20 MB of stuff on my CF Card... All of them downloaded to the Visor then transferred to to CF. When I transfer back from CF to RAM, I simply delete the app in RAM when I am done (The original copy is still on he CF).. VFS support should automate this process when released.
