What kind of SIlkscreen does this Plat have?

Anyone seen this before?

Look at the silkscreen area. Next to the menu and home buttons appear to be "tabs"? What are those? Is this a silkscreen "overlay" or is this the way the Plat came? What do these buttons do?

I don't read Japanese, but I'm pretty sure that's just a Japanese VPL. Take a look at this. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the extra silkscreen "tabs" do.

My US VPL does not have the tabs.

If you poke around the site, you will notice that all of the Japanese models have the tabs. I am guessing that the function of the tabs must have something to do with the version of graffiti that is used. The Japanese written language is very difficult to learn (and there are several of them to boot!)

I did babelfish the page, but could not figure it out.

Cool POSE to the rescue

It does seem to be something unique to the Japanese version.
Here is an image from POSE.

Extra features for Japanese versions

These "tabs" are for additional features for use on Japanese language units. These features have been on all Handspring products shipped to Japan, not just the "new" ones.

The only feature I remember is that the top tab switched from Kanji to Roman characters. I got to play with a Japanese unit while waiting in an airport a few months ago. The rest of the tabs were also used to manage the unique language needs of the Japanese units. (I just don't remember what they were... )
