Unhappy

I recently purchased a Visor Deluxe but previously used a PalmPilot and Sidekick as my PIM. Is syncing the Visor to Sidekick using TrueSync possible? If not, any suggestions on how to get my data out of Sidekick and into another program that is compatible with the Visor?

If you are interested in Outlook I know that the info from SideKick can be imported without a problem. I'm using Outlook 2000 so I can't speak for Outlook 97 or whatever version you have access to. If it's 2000 and you wanna use it then you're golden.

Ark.

I use truesync and sidekick and i haven't had any problems with it now.
I did when i first try setting it up. I couldn't get it to sync at all. Have you tried to go to the truesync webb page???? I found a lot of info and help there. Don't ask me what I did. I don't remember.
Sri I can't help you more. There might be a conflict between the visor and the palm.. My advice would be delete true sync and install a new and updated version called true sync+. Now I remember. Its hell getting old.

hope this helps.

The Visor uses the PalmOS, so if you used SideKick with a Palm Pilot it'll work the same with your Visor.

Later,

I had a lot of trouble finding out how to use my Visor Deluxe with Sidekick 98. I finally got it to work with TrueSync Plus, BUT, it's important to have only TrueSync Plus and not any other version of TrueSync installed. I seemded like the whole system would get confused and just do nothing. I downloaded a free copy of TrueSynch Plus that was designed for Excite, but can be used with any compatible conduit. To synch. I exit Sidekick, open TrueSync Plus (this assumes that you have first set up which info you want to synch), click on the "Click to Synchronize circle, which opens a little window that tells you to press the synch button on the cradle. That's it. However, I find that I can only synch my Calendar, Addresses, Memo and ToDo list, not expenses and not activities.

Before I found out how to do this, I investigated using Outlook, which is scary, it's big and powerful and vulnerable, and Time and Chaos, which I did not like much. It was easy, but tedious to export/import the info from Sidekick to those programs just by checking what formats they can import and doing an Export in Sidekick to that format. The pain is then having to set up every field in your records, so Outlook (for instance) will recognize what you had in Sidekick. Then, of course, you have to do the same thing to synch your records to your Visor. I tried the Pocket Mirror utility, which is on the Handspring disk to synch to Outlook and it worked. Good luck.

It looks like Motorola/Starfish has all but abandoned Sidekick and I may do the same.

Hi Frank,
Perhaps, I should have been clearer. I also had TruSync Plus and couldn't get it to work. The reason, apparently is that my copy of Sidekick 98 had an earlier version of TruSync coupled with it. I had to remove that. Also, I do not synch from the Tools menu in Sidekick. Instead, I close Sidekick and open TrueSync by itself.
I hope it works for you.

Hi Orrie.
Mine is working quite well. I like you, had problems, and like you everything worked out. true sync web page helped alot.
I like my sidekick and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Its simple and easy to use, very versitile, and if you have problems you can contact them and they will help.
good luck with your visor. I really like mine.
By the way I like anything that has a small learning curve, If I have to spend 3 or 4 weeks learning to use a program then I don't need it.

take care.

Talking Success!

Everyone,
Thanks for all of your helpful suggestions! I was finally able to sync my Visor with SideKick 99, after upgrading from SideKick 98. I'm not sure exactly what I finally did right, but I'm pretty sure it had everything to do with upgrading to the latest version of TrueSync. I see that there has been success for some of you in synching with SideKick 98. Since I prefer 98 to 99, I may get adventurous and see if I can get a sync with 98 to work. I'm not impressed with the changes that were made in 99. There is much more functionality in 98. I do think it's too bad that Starfish seems to have given up on SideKick altogether. I really like SideKick and I loathe the thought of eventually having to migrate to Outlook and thus be "assimilated" by Microsoft. People keep trying to talk me into it. I've looked at it and it is big and scary. Thanks again!

I used almost the same words to say the same thing. Since Starfish became part of Motorola, their focus has been on mobile phone/wireless applications. Sidekick 99 is a stripped down version, although it has never been clear to me why they deleted functionality.

Again, you and I share the same thoughts about Outlook. I have to admit, it does everything I need to have done, and it presents the information beautifully. Also, the Pocket Mirror utility that came with the Visor make synching with Outlook very smooth. But Outlook's sheer mass and vulnerability to mailicious attack has me scared. Also, there seems to be an endless series of patches, fixes, and security alerts for Outlook. I still use Outlook Express as a mail and news client, I also use an alternate e-mail client, The Bat!, in the hope that if Outloook and Outlook Express suffer attacks, I can still function.

Cool

If you like the sidekick keep using it. Don't worry about what people say or think. If someone jumps in the lake should you follow???? as long as side kick does everything I want it to I will keep using it. As for the forseeable future, I don't think I will be switching to anything else. The only reason Motarola took over starfish was for the Truesync technology.
I use outlook x for email and newsgroups also. Its not bad, but as with all MS products it could be better without all the fat.
Take care one and all and have a nice labor day week end. We all desearve it.
