I just installed the beta version of PiDirect. I have been beta testing Bozidar's LauncherIII which also allows programs to be run (or rather copied to RAM) from the card. As far as I can tell, PiDirect doesn't seem to be able to do anything that Launcher can't (e.g. databases that an application writes to must be stored in internal RAM) and it is my understanding that Launcher will remain free. Also, Launcher works with the older PalmOS used by Visor Solo and Deluxe as well as newer versions - I was using it on the 2 meg Visor, but last weekend I upgraded to a Platinum so I can verify that it works well on both machines! Does anyone know if there are any advantages to the PiDirect software? Maybe I am missing something...

I am sure Launcher III and PiDirect with their pros and cons, As we use different approach on handling this probloem

Some advantage of PiDirect:
1. Read-only databases and application can be placed on card and directly access.
2. Allow specified scanning path for PiDirect at full version
3. Allow access database larger than internal memory of visor

I believed users can added more after they have experienced with PiDirect.

I could be wrong??

I thought the big difference was piDirect ran apps DIRECTLY off the card.
VS.
Launcher III, moves apps from card to ram, and back(actually deletes) when done.

DOES SOMEONE KNOW THIS FOR SURE?

Are you stupid ? How do you imagine that ? Do you run all program DIRECTLY from your HDD on PC ?? Memplug is not additional memory for your PDA, but something like HDD for it. The only difference is that they added access to databases on memplug. And 'Allow access database larger than internal memory of visor' is very interesting thing. Looks like they wrote own handler for databases. Good to see this

Ssas, take your name calling somewhere else. It's unproductive and only serves to make people ignore your posts. Obviously from your 9 posts you're new, but I hope the VC staff takes care of that.

That's right.. The directory configured in PiDirect is effectively Visor Memory. Whatever you put in this directory will appear and work as if in the Visor's memory (only non editable databases like docs maps etc.).

The apps you place in the \Palm\Launcher show up on the desktop and are switched into Visor memory when started and and deleted on exit. It doesn't work with data files as yet.

Well, excuseeeeeeeeee me!

I was (incorrectly?) under the assumption that the apps & databases could be acessed/run while in the memplug w/o necesitating a move to ram first. This being the great benefit BEYOND the regular memplug function of storage only, like Launcher III.

Please note, I did not swear this to be true and still don't.
I hereby, humbly, bow to all those who are experts among us. Please enlighten us. The difference between:
*memplug
*memplug w/piDirect
*Launcher III.

Dear moderator, where is my little friend, spellcheck? I had to look up necessitating. 1c, 2ss, 2cc, 1s ??
(in a book, for crimany (sic) sake)

I think the only one who is qualified to answer these questions is PiDeveloper. PiDeveloper, please clear things out or people are going to shout to each other. Everybody, cool down.

Hi all,

I don't want to go into too technical terms, here is some terms I borrow from PC.

*memplug -> Design as a hard disk as a secondary storage
*piDirect -> Extend your OS (PalmOS) to access virtaul memory
*LauncherIII -> Act as a Auto-Mover that copy application to your internal memory when enter the appl. and automatically delete it when you exit (It is the same approach of PalmOS 4.0 as I know)

Thank you piDeveloper,

Is there still the 10 sub-directory limit? I need more, more, more.
I can hardly have any fun at this level!

And thank you everyone for rallying behind me to say "I was right!"
That was close, it would have been the first time ever that I was wrong.

j/k j/k j/k (really!)

Lakers leading 54 vs. 48, I hope the Sixers win just so it keeps going. What great basketball!

sure it can contain more than 10 directories!!
Of course, it needs money also.

After I tried the PiDirect, it is worth to buy it because my visor really seems to be expanded!! I am using 128Mb SMC... haha...

However, it is a bit slow when i am using 128Mb card. Maybe the file system is much lager.

Hope this is not an expensive software.
What is the price of PiDirect later?? ( or now????)
How much will you expect? just a survey...

I'm ready to buy too, eeist!

Now that I got past the 'seamless' install, I'm ready to rock n' roll.
All I need is an UNLOCK code for the green light.

piDeveloper, I'm over the barrel as promised, wallet in hand. Roll out the order page or MAKE ME YOUR NEXT LEVEL BETA TESTER.
I can't hold my breath much longer.

Ghm. In PiDirect you're using the same way as LauncherIII. The difference is that LauncherIII doesn't patch PalmOS, so it works more correct. PiDirect sets new handlers for most traps, so it make possible to be 'invisible' for applications. But. The problem is that not all handlers work correctly at the moment. I've got few fatal exception with error about wrong card slot. Actually it's just my vision of it, so, possible I'm wrong.
I have an idea. I'm sure that many programmers are using memplug, so it will be really nice to make all default applications Open Source.
