TIA for your help!

I could quite easily retrieve email from the road using remote hotsync, until our sysop installed the security patch to Outlook 2000. Now I get a box on my PC which says something like "allow access?". If I click yes, then all is well. Problem is, I can't click yes from hundreds of miles away.

How do I get around this?

FWIW, I can't directly get the email from the server because the firewall requires an SSL enabled email program on the Visor Deluxe. I haven't found one of those yet. Thus, remote hotsync has been my solution, until now.

Any advice? (Handspring tech support has been useless: they keep sending irrelevant, seemingly random, advice to my question.)

Unless you can convince your administrator to uninstall the security patch (and the uninstallation may not be trivial-- depending on the how O2K was installed, it may require an uninstall of Office 2000), you are S O L when it comes to hotsync'ing mail remotely.

Since it sounds like you have your computer on (and possibly logged in) while you're away from the office, one workaround that comes to mind is to use Outlook's rules to forward your incoming new messages to a POP3-accessible account (like Yahoo! Mail) and then you can use any decent Palm-based mailer to retrieve it on any internet connection via POP3.

Of course, this will probably require that you also leave Outlook running and logged in.

If you do not wish to, or cannot leave Outlook up and running to forward messages, try using a systray program called "Mail REDirect" (it can be downloaded from ZDNet's Hotfiles.com).

Mail REDirect pulls messages from a POP3 mailbox and forwards them (with the headers intact-- a nice feature) to another POP mailbox of your choice. If you can access your Exchange server's POP3 and SMTP ports from the company side of the firewall without having to enable SSL, this program will work. Forward it to Y! Mail and you'll be set.

I used to use this program and method to forward new messages to my PCS phone and it worked quite nicely-- the forwarding feature without messing with the headers was really nice as I can directly reply without having to copy/paste the correct address.

Another option

If you are syncing by dialing into your work PC, another option would be to get the latest version of PocketMirror installed on the PC. PocketMirror automatically deals with the pop up box so you never have to click anything. You can get the latest version of PocketMirror at www.chapura.com

Thanks for the advice. The problem is now solved, and here's what it took.

Loaded Pocket Mirror off the Handspring CD.
Updated Pocket Mirror to version 3.
Still couldn't hot-sync without the security message.

Then:
Deleted the 'attachments to go' mail conduit, and replaced it with the latest mail conduit off the Palm webpage.

Presto! Now able to hot-sync remotely without getting the error message.
