Unhappy

I have a 14 month old VDX. It has never been dropped, but it has developed a semi-circular crack in the front of the casing around the power button. Has anyone else had experiences with this kind of "stress-fracture" (pun intended)?

Stress Cracks

Welcome to the wonderful world of stress-cracked visors. Yes, its a well known problem. I think its due to the snap cover putting undue stress on the front panel of the visor, and there are two screws that come up from the underneath.

Not a lot you can do about it. You can call Handspring if you're still under warranty and complain, and if they're feeling nice they may decide to replace it for you.

Cheers!

Thanks. So it's a known problem. Guess there still are some advantages to the old Palms. I think I'll drop them an email. It can't hurt.

I too have stress cracks, but on the front and back. (My cradle needs a little extra push to make the sync connection.) Even though I have the cracks, I still love my Visor. When are those 3rd party aluminum cases coming out?

I have had cracks around the power button, on the ridge that lets you clip on the snap on cover, and in my silo. I would like to put this out as a word of warning that some of the PDA Panache custom visor stylis can cause the silo to crack. This was just my experience with it.

Exact same story......
I had the same problem as the rest of you. I called Handspring to see if I could get it replaced. My 1 year warranty was up (by at least 2 months) so they said there was nothing they could do. So I told them I had seen this problem come up in a lot of discussion groups (mainly this thread) and that other people said that there was a manufacturing defect. She stumbled around for a bit but then said "yes you are right, there was a manufacturing defect with the outer casing". They are replacing it free of charge.

Moral of the story....
To get your unit replaced for this defect, tell them that you know there was a manufacturing defect pertaining to the Visor Deluxe and insist that they get you a new one.

I can attest knowledge of this same "near the pwr. button" fissure crack developing on a friends Ice VDX. HS replaced it, no questions. (Some screen-blitzing re-sets started happening, not sure how much due to this.) It was owned just about 1 yr. exactly, never dropped or abused, only standard styli were used, it was treated w/care, incl. the hot-sync process -- and the front snap-on was never used; it was always kept in a padded case.

I just noticed mine has a crack near the power button as well. I have had it about 13 months.

Did you guys EVER tighten or turn the screws in the back? I did, recently. I am sure that the crack near the power button was from too tight a screw. I would suggest everyone loosen that screw 1/4 turn.

Hope they come out with the color Platinum before this thing is destroyed.

I just looked this up.. I purchased this on 5/9/00. It figures

Only Translucent Cases?

Yes, I have had two Ice VDLX's crack around the power button. So has my friend with the Green one, a buddy with the orange one, and a cousin with the Blue. However, my bro with the black VDLX has never had that happen.

Has anyone seen the problem with the black cases?

Oh, and BTW

Just recently I called up HS to get the cracked case replaced. The short version of the story is that I was told it was out of warranty, and that it would be $85 to get it replaced. I respectfully complained that that was a bit much to replace a 5 or 10 dollar piece of plastic, which I was glad to pay for. They couldn't send it because it would void my warranty, which had expired anyways. (Yeah, I didn't get that either) So I asked to speak to a supervisor (no sense in arguing with someone who can't help you), and about ten minutes later the person came back on and told me they would do a warranty replacement.

So, if out of warranty, ask to speak to a supervisor so that you can just buy a case part. Hopefully you can get a warranty replacement, and if not, maybe order a piece instead of a whole unit.

Another BTW

Did anyone else notice that the Ice VDLX is about a 16th of an inch shorter in the case opening around the screen than other units? I found this out at the last CES, when I was discussing the quality control of the writerights with the Fellowes people. I told them that the sheets are too long, and showed them the sheet on my Ice VDLX. One of the reps pulled out his 2mb Visor, and sure enough the Ice is about two ridges shorter in the opening.

I have an Ice VDx and am using WriteRights. They fit perfectly well.
On the other hand I don't have another visor to compare against.

Maybe it depends on where the Visor was made?

Oh my god..
i just went back to "Best Buy" , (got a warranty there too),last friday and traded in my Blue ice for the graphite one.
I started devloping the same crack on my blue ice by the power button too only after 3 months well i thought it was my fault. until a few weeks ago i pressed the power button and the small blue ice piece uder it popped off i started to cry and cry. well tech support at handsring was very pimped a$$$ they said they would replace it. but remembered that i had the warranty from best buy. the cool thing was they ran out of the blue ones so i took the graphite. People do say the graphite one doesnt get the cracks, I REALLY HOPE NOT.
i tell ya if it does!!

I'm with you all. My case on a green visor is cracking just beside the visor logo where the screw holds the green front and ice back together. I have never dropped the visor or even treated it roughly. I have also noticed cracks where the springboard is put into the unit. This is the area where the hard cover or the thin leather case mounts onto the casing. I still really like my deluxe but am disappointed with its durability. I am hoping Handspring will take care of it like they have for many others.
