Could anyone let me know if the backlight sheds some light under the silkscreen to enable accurately tapping its buttons and writing in the correct fields in absolute darkness?

I can't say that I know for sure, but don't bet on it. Everything points to the fact that Handspring is using the Palm V screen. I am sure that it is the same technology as every other Palm device that has come out with a backlight.
