Question

I've got the Visor Deluxe with Minstrel S and Yada Yada service.

Just like everyone else, I always get the "fatal error" crash 90% of the time after I manually "shut down" the modem.

Just to try it, I just pulled the modem out without going through the shut down. The screen then shows the "Removing Minstrel S" message then immediately soft resets WITHOUT crashing! I reproduced this about 5 times today without any problems at all.

I wonder if this is safe to do. I'm afraid that when I do it next time, my Visor's memory will be erased or some damage might occur.

If this method is safe, then it may avoid the crashing all together. Let me know what you all think about this. If you have a backup module, backup the Visor first before trying. I think it's safe...just like removing any other module.

Also, for those of you that don't have the optimized Visor or would like to see the difference between the opt. and non-opt. Visor, visit this link: http://www.millionbill.com/visor

Thanks.
Mike

You do have your system on the backup module, don't you?

I have the same setup and rarely get a Fatal Error when I turn the Minstrel modem off. I do try to do this before I turn off the Visor and then pull the modem off.

Although I own a Prism, I ALWAYS switch back to the application Launcher (the default {built in} Palm OS one) before I remove any module.. I never have problems.. Pulling a module out when the module (or related) application is on screen is just asking for a soft (or worse, hard) reset.

I agree with the comment on about the backup module, IT'S A MUST!

I always turn off the modem before removing, it's just safer.

(fyi - I got a few "fatal" errors a couple of times by not thinking and removing the backup module without switching back to the Application Launcher!)

I would usually power down the modem before pulling it out of the Visor, but 95% of the time it crashes, and I have to reset the Visor with the little pin.

You sure are lucky to not have those crashes. I basically expect it every time I try to shut the modem down.

Before I pull out the Minstrel S, I do go the "palm home" screen. I'm out of the browser, but the modem is still on. After the modem is removed, the Visor just soft resets.

BTW, I do have a backup module...it's a lifesaver!

I have the Platinum and yada yada and i've never gotten the fatal error. After hearing everyone talk about the error i always go back to the app launcher and power off the modem with power switch. But sometimes it does a soft reset on the handspring and i have to say yes to reinstall hackmaster hacks and open up silver screen again. but no problems besides the inconvience

My Minstrel S crashes constantly. I sometimes find it crashed-auto restarted by Shield and didn't even know about it.

I always power off the modem before pulling it out - if I don't, I get a fatal error/soft reset. If I power down, I usually don't have a problem - sometimes it does a soft reset, but not often.

Lightbulb Minstrel S Answer from OmniSKy

Not shure is this applies to YadaYada, but I was having constant crashes, resets, and serial errors with my Modem. I spoke with OmniSky tech suppot...he advised when you are done using the modem, prior to removel...

1. Power down the modem.
2. Go back to the application screen or any basic Palm program.
3. Wait 15 seconds (I found you have to wait 30 seconds)
4. Turn off Visor
5. Remove modem.

This seems to have worked for me.

I only get the fatal error if I remove the Minstrel S while the visor is off. If the visor is on and I pull the modem everything is fine and I do not get a fatal error.

I am sure that the "Removing Minstrel S modem" message is built into the software of the modem. And thus it is OK to do this. I feel better when I pull the modem off and get this message.
