Question Visor Pro & Neo out?

I read on PDA Buzz that there were two new Visors out. The Visor Neo and the Visor Pro. And from the sounds of it, they are not that great an offering.

How true is this?

Thanks.

Now I readethem and all I can say is why?

No Palm OS4?
Only 4 bit color (16 grey)
no silent alarm?
non-recharble - (Visor Neo)

Uh . . . Where is the new color model for goodness sake? will these new models support VFS file format? Is there improved security in the 3.5.2H3? Wheres the improved resolution?

Here's why:

OK, even though this seems to sound a lot like practically every other thread about these two models, and it's getting a little redundant, here's why the Neo and Pro are being made: the lower end is a big market where a lot of money is made by sheer numbers of sales. Within the lower end there is still competition. If Handspring didn't replace the Deluxe they would lose sales because others are or will be releasing new and better lower end models. People who buy PDA's often don't have $400+ for a higher end unit. Maybe they have $200-$300 to spend. They will buy the best product that they can find at their price point. This is why I bought my Deluxe 2 years ago. I couldn't afford a Palm Vx. The 8 megs RAM and SB slot gave the Deluxe the edge over Palm IIIs offering 2 and 4 megs RAM at the time. When I buy a new PDA, it will probably be a higher end one. It will probably have a color screen too. The fact is, however, that I am here right now typing on VisorCentral's discussion board and eagerly awaiting a new improved higher end device. I am a clear example that good lower end stuff promotes brand loyalty and a larger base of return customers. I still think Handspring makes good products regardless of whether their new releases are super-flashy or just well functioning appliances. Chances are, they will have a worthy successor to the color high-end or they will lose that market. They will make it because people are crying out for it. Now be quiet and let them get back to designing it.

You got it all wrong. I am not complaining. Handspring has been a symbol of innovation in the Palm platform. I have owned a VDX and a Prism. Currently my fiancee has the prism but I play with it all the time when I go over to her place. The reason I said why was because I didn't feel they needed to make those devices. The offering they had was a strong enough suite and all they had to do is price the devices appropriatley against the crop of new pdas by Palm and Sony. I am still a big fan of Handspring and hope they stay very innovative.

no need to get snippy

This is a positive for some people. Not everyone wants to replace their handheld every year or two. Even Li-Ion batteries have an expected life.

My Edge supports VFS, so I don't see why these wouldn't.

Guess I misunderstood. Sorry about that last line. Too much testosterone, I guess. They say it makes your hair fall out, but I'm not convinced I still think Neo and Pro are good to have around, though, even if they're not enough to cause most current Visor users to upgrade. The Pro is especially. And I guess for some reason they felt the need to use silver paint on the better one, but change the one that had silver paint (and was the better, but is now the lesser) to the latest Mac colors. The fun candy colors continue. Run-ons, anyone?

I'm guessing (hoping) that Handspring is working on something that will be worth the wait.

Do you mean that the Pro is plated with metal instead of being painted with metallic paint? If this is the case, it might be a durable finish after all. Can anyone verify this info? I recall a similar discussion when the Platinum came out.

This is my first post here and the reason is because I am the target consumer that Handspring is going after. I am quite happy with my Palm Vx, even with grayscale and so forth. However, The Handspring Pro would fit my needs perfectly.

First of all, my major need is more space. I usually run around 3/4 full and don't store programs that I don't have a daily use for.
16 megs would be perfect for me.

My second need is a easier to read screen. Although I have never seen the Pro in person, it appears much easier to read.

In addition the increase in speed and USB syncing would be very nice.

Now can anyone give me some info on a few things about Handspring that I need to know in order to make the decision whether or not to make the jump. Like, is the Handspring desktop the same, or similar to Palms? I have read some post from Handspring user who complain about backing up their devices, does the desktop not back up your programs?
Also, will it be possible to save my current info if I change to a Handspring?

Thanks in advance!

first of all, when i said real silever i mean to say it looks like real silver, i have no idea what its made of.

the desktop should be exactly the same as palms. taking u have the most recent version. with backing up, the desktop will back up ur normal programs like datebook, address book, etc but if u want your programs backed up as well u will need a seperate app that will do this(i prefer backup all, because it backs up the visor completly and puts it in the backup folder in the desktop during ur next hotsync.) i am pretty sure their is a way to do this, but since im not sure about upgrading from a plam to handspring i would go to handsprings site since they have all this information. in their site try customer support and type in ur question(palm to handspring) or go to the pro's page, click FACS and look for the neesary question.

hope this helps. and i am very glad someone is very interested in their new devise and is willing to move to a different company witch at first u thought u would never do.

Thats a very good question.

I actually love both companies. Both Handspring and Sony have been very innovative. They haven't been sitting on their butts like Palm Inc. has.

As far as which company is better? Thats a loaded question. Sony is definatly is the more powerful and influential company, but I don't know about them being better from a PDA standpoint. Handspring was the first to give true USB support, fully support the Mac, 16 bit color, expandable slot, have Mp3 player add-ons available (I still own the SoundsGood Audio Player ).

To tell you the truth I think the reason I'm on a Sony is because they gave me what I wanted now in a neat package. (built in Mp3 player, 320x320 screen, relective screen, 8bit/16bit color, expansion slot, very good form factor)

I love Handspring and Sony

There actually is a silent alarm on the Pro - it's in the preferences. The charge light flashes.

I was able to return my Platinum [last day for the refund!] and get the Pro on Friday [Fry's... nuff said]. Two of my big concerns were space and batteries and this takes care of them both. So far so good!
