Question

Has anyone had any problems with the new prism's graffiti? It doesn't work that well. It seems to me it's not that sensitive..or maybe it's too sensitive.

Go to http://www.handspring.com/support/softwareup.jhtml and download the Handspring Updater v1.1 which has a fix for the Graffiti problem.

I have the patch, and it fixed the inital problem - but I am still having difficulty with the graffiti. I have used TealScript to try to fix it, but it is only marginally better. The characters that my old Palm 7 and Palm 3 used to recognize just aren't working as smoothly on my Prism.

Mind you we are talking milliseconds here, but when you are writing graffiti, that matters. I was used to the Palm 3 & 7 but now with the Prism it seems to be a slower, or just a bit more inaccurate. Only certain characters are consistently unrecognized, (but not on the Palm 3 or 7) and the painting of characters on the screen seems the tiniest bit slower. Could this be due to the extension Handspring had to write to the Palm OS to fix the initial problem? Is it just me or is there anyone else out there having some characters still be unrecognized?

Thanks,
-jdawg

Unhappy Still Have Graffiti Problems too!

I thought it was just me. I have the patch but am still having problems with my Prism. In particular I have problems with M, H, E, W, S and some other characters. I thought I was going mad so I got out my old PalmPilot Professional and went through some tests. Not only is the Graffiti worse on my Visor it seems slower as well.

What to do? I have tried re-calibrating my digitizer and have tried with different stylus. My PalmPilot Professional even understands Graffiti with my fingernail better!

I just down loaded the patch and it seems to help.

Try this your self...before you install the patch...

first.. run the graffiti program and write several letters while you watch the screen (bottom left) to see what the PDA thinks you wrote...

second... install the patch and do the above test again.

on mine it definately seemed to improve the character recognition.

I'm a believer!

I just tried it. The Graffiti before the patch is TOTALLY UNUSEABLE. It was like my Visor was on drugs. The patch makes things much better, but not great.

The reason I had an opportunity to try this is because I installed a game called Nebulus. It totally crashed my Prism. Terrible. I had to open it and disconnect the battery in order to get the thing to re-boot.

Avoid Nebulus like the plague.

Smile

After installing Quickbits (http://www.2bitsoftware.com/QuickBits/default.htm) it seems to have sped things up enough to improve my graffiti recognition. I also went back to the original graffiti (from TealScript) and it seems to be working better now....

My Prism has had the patch installed and also still has problems. I installed the latest TealEcho and I can see with my own eyes how badly it is recognizing the input. It seems that there's some kind of interruption in the digitizing process that causes a straight line to be drawn between two points in a curve, thus mangling the charcter. In some cases, the initial point the stylus is placed on is not recorded properly and the beginning of the character shows up incorrectly.

I drew a 'W' repeatedly being very careful to do it the same for each time. It came out wildly different much of the time. When any curve or diagonal line is drawn, there's very jagged 'interference' or 'noise' in the line as TealEcho reports it. I also see very poor, jittery lines in TealPaint. I practically can't use it because of that.

I do have QuickBits installed... I'm hoping that a later version of Afterburner supports the VZ better so that I can speed the thing up more and maybe correct this.

Yet another Handspring defect. I'm really starting to regret having purchased this Visor. That EM-500 is looking pretty good right now.

I moved from a Palm Vx to the Prism and noticed the graffiti problem immediately. I downloaded the patch (and I use QuickBits to speed up the OS) and now I find the Prism at least as accurate (and maybe a tad moreso) than the Vx.

With other experienced users having a problem, one logical conclusion is that quality control is not what it should be. I'd contact Handspring and ask that they send you a new unit. Bob

Cool

I just bought a prism after using a VDX for almost a year. The graffiti recognition was terrible and I also seemed to have a problem with digitizer not recognizing the correct placement of my selection.(The digitizer seemed to read my inputs as being 5-7 pixels to the left of where I was actually selecting.) I downloaded the patch but it did not help me out at all so I called handspring and they sent me a replacement. Although it took almost two weeks to get it my new Prism has no problems at all.
