Well the report is not broken, just my Edge.

The Details

  1. Did a final hot-synch with my Deluxe to make sure it looked just how I wanted it.
  2. Installed the desktop software for the Edge and left it sitting at the "Hot-synch before pressing NEXT" dialog.
  3. Put the Edge in the cradle and let it charge for the suggested 90 minutes.
  4. Did the initial Palm OS setup (set date/time and digitizer).
  5. Pressed the Hotsynch button. The synch application froze on the PC during "Backing up handheld databases".
  6. Removed the Edge from the cradle, wouldn't power-on using any of the buttons.
  7. Did a soft-reset. The Edge came alive.
  8. Looked at my contacts and they were there. I was kind of excited.
  9. Pressed the stylus to the Categories drop down and got the application menu instead. Thought "Hmmn, thats strange".
  10. Clicked around a bit and realized the stylus could only cause the application menu to drop down. Thought maybe it was a menu-hack problem of some sort.
  11. Did a hard-reset and proceeded to set the digitizer figuring I would remove hacks from the backup directory and re-synch.
  12. Now clicking just makes the crosshair go back and forth from corner to corner.

Reading some of the other problems has me concerned. I may just take this back and wait for another production run. This Edge sure feels fantastic in my pocket though.

Yeah I plan on returning it but was thinking maybe I should wait for a new shipment. With the other common problems out there I was concerned that other ones in the same run will have the same problem.

Wow, this seems to be a trend. So far I got off lucky..no problems at all. But these repetitious problems have me wondering if I'm not holding a ticking time bomb in my hand.

Do a hard-reset to be sure. Better to find out now than wait. It is possible that I had a menu hack or something installed on the old Visor, but the hard-reset threw it for a complete loop.

Made me wonder if I could have had a functioning unit for a good long while only to find a hard-reset bringing it to it's knees.

I received my Edge yesterday and it is now completely useless! I got the same problem with just the application menu dropping down wherever one touched the screen (I did not have any Hacks installed). I did a hard reset and all I get now are the digitizer crosshairs jumping from corner to corner. Previous to it going wrong I had been using the new Fast Lookup application.

I was prepared to give the Edge a chance but as others have reported the same serious bug, this machine is going back and I'm going to ask for a full refund.

Palm, I'm returning to the fold!

Thumbs down

Well, barely a couple of hours after the Edge moved into its semi-lfe with only the digitizer crosshairs showing, I just went to turn it on and it's completely dead. No screen display at all and a hard reset does nothing.

I wonder how many others are experiencing problems?

Oh, and if you're wondering...the Edge was completely charged and has hardly been used before it went to PDA heaven.

Cool

My first Edge didn't have a backlight. The second one is great and I have been carrying every day for the last week or so. So far it works great (sound of fingers crossing).

bradhaak,

How often are you recharging the batteries? If everyday, how much are they run down when you put it back on the cradle?

Thanks!!!

Thumbs up

My Edge tends to live in the cradle when it's not in my pocket. This shouldn't be a problem since Lithium Ion cells don't have any memory effect. There is a maximum charge-cycle limit (500 full charge/discharge cycles), but I'm not sure what this means in partial cycles. Anyway, I tend to replace organizers in less time than i can possibly hit the limit.

I guess to answer your question, it hasn't seen 85% since the first charge after I bought it.

Just curious, but have those of you experiencing digitizer problems upgraded from a Platinum or Prism that had the digitizer patch installed and has now been copied onto the Edge? If they're not fresh setups, this might be something to check...

Mine was a fresh setup. I haven't had a Visor before (therefore no patch) and at the moment have no intention of buying another ever! I've had Palms, Pocket PCs, Psions, Sharps and Casios and have never been left with a dead machine. A soft reset or hard reset at worst has cured all ills. What disappoints me is there appears to be a common bug here which is very serious.

Perhaps the Edge was rushed to market too soon. I hope Palm don't make the same mistake with their new offerings.

Red face

This is weird. Got home last night and placed the Edge in the cradle and it returned to life. Seems that the battery ran down after being stuck with the repeating crosshairs screen (even though I had turned it off). Since then it has worked.

I'm still not happy about this. My unit is far too unreliable and reading other reports suggests this machine is bugged. I can't get in touch with Handspring until Monday so I'll see if it crashes spectacularly again.

On Monday I will call HS to request a return. I absolutely love my Edge, but I can't continue to ignore the problems everyone seems to be experiencing. And It's not in my best interest to sit around waiting for this problem to show up and bite me in the ass.

Looks like I will end up with the Palm M505 after all. Too bad it had to come to this, because the Edge is one of the FINEST handhelds I've ever owned. That says a lot.

The problems wouldn't be so bad if people knew that they could just flash a new OS upgrade into the unit. Not having flash memory is looking to be more and more of a problem.

Well, I've hard reset my Edge twice, and backed it up/restored it using Jackback, and I've had no sign of any of the difficulties you mentioned. I'm going to try running the battery WAY down, and seeing if that makes a difference. I really need this thing to be reliable, so it's getting road-tested now. The only thing I did notice is that after the most recent hard-reset/restore, the thing was still producing system/hotsync sounds even though the selector was set to off. Simply changing it to 'high' and then back to 'off' was enough to rectify the problem.

Foo fighter: Don't give up now man!! You may just have a good one (as I appear to...) At least wait for a reason before sending it back!

Anything else anyone wants me to try?
Now to go about learning how to upgrade it to 16mb. (I wish Tony R. would make his method available!!)

Cheers,
Stimp

LOL! That's the sad part...I really do LOVE my Edge. And it's given no grief or reason for wanting to part with it. It's just that I'm worried that these issues will spring up (get it?..spring..Handspring!) eventually. Who knows!

I'm not going to do anything yet. I still have a couple weeks left under Handspring's 30 day guarantee policy. Needless to say, I'm going to be keeping a close eye on my Edge for screwy behavior.

Further to the troubles I posted (digitizer lock-up) I've had a series of very unsatisfactory conversations with Handspring technical support and customer services (in Europe). Basically my Edge is currently working but only because the battery ran down and allowed the machine to reset itself. Tech support will not replace the unit as it currently works even though it did lock up and a hard reset would not solve the problem.

As they will not replace the unit and I have no faith in the problem not re-occuring they leave me with no choice but to ask for a refund and return the unit.

Even then they tell me it will take three weeks to refund my money, saying my card company will hold the money for a few weeks to make interest. I've never heard such nonsense. HS also knock off the cost of postage for sending me the faulty Edge and I have to pick up the cost of returning the unit which is faulty.

This is my first experience of dealing with Handspring. It will also be my last. I recommend that nobody purchase a machine from them in Europe (I understand the American return policy is different and far more generous in terms of time).

Second try at my Edge

I returned my broken Edge and got a new one. This new one works fine so far.

Funny someone mentioned the battery drained real fast when the repeating cross-hair problem showed up. When I took it back to Staples I went to show the manager what it did and it wouldn't power on. I had just looked at it a couple days previous.

If I had tried charging it then it might have worked but I wouldn't have been happy being stuck with a unit that did that out of the box.

So far though I am happy with my blue Edge. Fits so much nicer in my pocket than the deluxe did.
