Microsoft, albeit having a much larger army, has been taking Windows CE forward by leaps and bounds. Palm has done very little to advance the pace of evolution of the Palm OS.
The only real advantage Microsoft has right now, in terms of a robust "next generation" embedded OS vs. PalmOS, is timing. Meaning WinCE is already at the place where Palm is heading, while Palm is still 6-12 months away at the very least. PocketPC will continue to gain marketshare on Palm in the meantime, but the tide could turn against Microsoft in a big way if this new Palm/Be OS turns out to be the black knight it looks to become.

Sad to say, but I think this spells the end for the BeOS as a desktop OS. As wonderful and innovative as it was, BeOS was going nowhere. It never acheived acceptance or developer support. That was stolen by Linux. I've always believed the only hope for Linux to achieve success on the desktop, was to layer the BeOS GUI on top of the Linux kernel. Palm could now license out the GUI to Linux distro firms like RedHat or Debian. This could help catapult Linux to success while making Palm a very rich company.
