Unhappy

Well, after 6 months of faithful service, my trusty graphite Deluxe, Avarice 1, went toes-up last night. I was sitting down to have a leisurely read, pulled it outof the soft case, pried off the hard screen cover, and lo and behold, my heart sunk as I noticed the large black smudge on the lower right corner of the screen, with a couple radials shooting out.

I have no idea what I did to crack the LCD... I didn't drop it or anything today. Which is ironic, since Avarice has already survived several nasty drops -- now that it finally goes, I don't know what did it.

I've called Handspring, and they say they'll ship be a refurb unit for $85. I'll get it, can't live without my visor, but the lustre just won't be the same.

RIP, Avarice 1. Welcome, Avarice 2.

We must all join together in this time of sorrow. It's always hard to loose a trusted family member. I've recently had to go through this myself. After loosing my first visor to a nasty accident, I've since had to adpopt a replacement. I do love the adopted visor as much as my first, but it'll just never be the same...

What can one say? Words are so meaningless. I will beam my business card to heaven, in hopes of catching the IR port of your dearly departed.

Check out the posts on that site that sends you replacement screens that you can put in yourself for something like $40!! You could still revive your Visor!

Maybe all is not lost... you can look into prosthetics for the Palm and Visor... kinda like a do-it-yourself Bionic Visor (The 6 million dollar Avarice 1???)

Jammer-

First of all, my condolences on your loss...

Sounds like the LCD was damaged as well (there was a mention of a "large dark smudge") so the glass replacement wouldn't work. In that case, the replacement would have to be the entire LCD assembly, not just the glass.

I checked out the "prosthetics" site and was extremely frightened. Like, where do they get this stuff? (Imagine dark, lonely alley..."Hey lady, want to buy a used LCD?")

Besides, they don't have any Visor LCD replacements...only Palm LCDs. Even so, at $80 it's close to what Handspring charges for a screen repair anyways...

My condolences jammer. I too will beam my visor in the air in the hopes that the spirit of Avarice 1 will gaze upon the 1's an 0's that I have sent.

Thanks for the advice, but actually, the $85 replacement is for them to send me an entire refurb Visor, from what the customer care rep said... I'd just have to send mine in once I got the replacement.

Everyons comments on this thread have me cracking up. Thanks.

Cool

The LCD replacement I was referring to was off the "prosthetics" site...They're selling replacement LCDs for $80 (when for $85 you can get a replacement Visor from Handspring).

Soon you'll have a new Visor to love and cherish...

The "condolence" posts cracked me up as well. At least Visor owners aren't a boring bunch...they're almost as fun as Mac users

Marcus... James... are ya listenin'? How about a VC R.I.P page of our own? Of course, we'll need an appropriate selection of tombstone icons

Wink

Thanks for the kind words. These units do not come out of a back alley. We are a legitimate business and have receipts for all items we have purchased. Plus they are not new but used with a 30 day warranty. We do not have complete screens for the Visor but if just the top glass cracked it can be fixed with our repair. I have fixed my own visor with the glass tops we offer.

Thanks,
