Question Power Issues w/ Backup Module, VDx, and Edge

Hi All,

I have a backup module, edge, and vdx. My main PDA is the edge, but I need to use my old vdx and bring it with me on my international trip (since it uses AAA batteries).

When I run the backup program on my edge to backup to the module , it works perfectly. Then I take the module, and slip it into my VDx and restore all the contents. Everything seems to be working perfectly except for I get this error:

Cannot restore keyboard because in use

Or something like that .. basically says my keyboard (stowaway) is in use. Anyway, I just hit the okay button and it continues to restore. After the restore has been completed, it requires me to reset. So I do. The screen then comes up into the normal mode and seems to act perfectly.

The problem arises when I try to turn off the VDx. It will NOT turn off!!! I am then forced to manually reset it (using the pin hole) then it gets stuck in an infinite loop and keeps flashing the PALMOS splash screen!

I am not running any hacks or any "odd" software.

Please help thank you!

It could have something to do with the different OS versions on the Edge and VDx, especially if you updated them with the patches from the HS website.

that's what I thought, but I asked the quesiton before on the board and they said that the only things backedup on the module is data not OS specific.

I have not upgraded my os in anyway (patches, etc...)

any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

You might try a couple of things. The first thing I would do is delete the Keyboard.prc file on the Deluxe and see if that clears up the problem. I have two Deluxe's and I am often bouncing data back and forth. I have used the Backup Module and my MemPlug to do full restores and both times I have had problems with the Keyboard app. Once I remove it, everything is fine.

The next thing I would try is removing the HandSpring OS Extensions. While you may not have downloaded and installed them personally, they may very well be there. If you are using PalmDesktop4 from HandSpring, it has been my experience that it will install the update for you after installing it. So, perform a Warm Reset on the PDA by pressing and holding the UP button. While holding the UP button press and release the Reset Button. Wait a few seconds and release the UP button.

You should now be able to go into the DELETE Function and remove any HandSpring Extension that may be installed. This could likely be your problem, as the updates for OS3.5(Edge) are different than the updates for OS3.1(Deluxe).

Once you remove the update, and anything else that you would like to delete, press and release the Reset Button again. This will Reset the HandHeld into Normal Mode and hopefully you will be error free.

If you try this and it does not work let us know. You may have to remove things one by one until you find the culprit.

Are you disabling the drivers for the keyboard before you backup? I have not used the Stowaway drivers before, but I know the prc for my Halfkeyboard has an "on" and "off" option. Maybe when you enable the keyboard drivers it is patching the OS in a way that does not transfer over the Backup Module?

GSR13,

I just performed a warm reset and I was able to get back into the OS. When I go to the delete menu and look at the HS Extensions, there are none there....

I then open up Filez so I can see which programs exactly reside on my visor, and I do see HSExtensions and HSExtUIRsc, however, they are both rom based and I cannot delete them.

I then proceeded to delete keyboard from the VDx, and then tried to beam over keyboard from my edge back to the VDx.... the VDx does not want to receive!! yes, I do have beam receive on in the preferences. So, in order to test this out, I tried sending from the VDx to the Edge and then it says "There are no exchange libraries availiable".

Tonewiz2k,

Yes, I did turn off keyboard before I backed up the edge, thus it was turned off when I transfered it to the VDx.

Any help would be appreciated!

OK.

I just tried it again - making sure keyboard was disabled before I backed up my edge.

After restoring back on the VDx and resetting it, I get this error:

MemoryMgrNew.c,
Line: 4128, Invalid handle
RESET

If I try to press reset it will not reset - however, I can get past it via a warm reset.

Anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you!

After you deleted the Keyboard.prc file and tried to Beam it back over, had you performed a soft reset? After a Warm Reset, Beaming does not work, as it is disabled.

I also tried backing up my Deluxe with the Keyboard Disabled I still had problems. In fact, I had the same problem you are having.

Perform a Warm Reset, Delete the Keyboard App. Then perform a soft reset and see if it works. If so, you can try beaming the Keyboard app again.

Also, if you are using V1.6 of the Keyboard app, you might consider changing to V1.5. I had nothing but problems on my Deluxe with V1.6.

GSR 13,

Thanks, I'll try to use the original driver from the Stowaway cd that I got, I think that's 1.5

What is the differnece between 1.5 and 1.6? what kind of functionality will I lose?

The only difference that I noticed is the "mouse" pointer and the "enter your stowaway serial number "feature"

That would pretty much be it, as far as I know.

Thanks for the reply again.

Okay, I just uninstalled version 1.6 and installed 1.5 driver.

After I resetted the VDx, it then went into that infinite loop again... so I had to warm reset.

Then I wanted to rebeam over keyboard from the edge to the Vdx, so I went to turn on the beam receive on the Vdx. Right now it's in the "off" position - when I select the ON position IT WILL NOT Move to the ON position!!! it's stuck in the off position!

Something is wierd.... i have no hacks or anything!!

PLEASE HELP , thanks!

When you perform a Warm Reset, you CANNOT beam. Consider a warm reset to simulate Safe Mode. You are running with minimum drivers, if you will.

In order to be able to BEAM again, you must perform a SOFT RESET. This will get you back to normal mode.

In your case, you need to WARM RESET to get the PDA out of the reset loop. Delete whatever applications or system extensions you believe are causing the problems and try a Soft Reset. If the PDA comes up, you have more than likely found the problem. If you still get the reset loop, Warm Reset and try again.

WARM RESET (NO BEAM)
DELETE PROBLEM APP
SOFT RESET (BEAM WORKS AGAIN)

You may have to perform a Warm Reset and Delete one application at a time until you figure out what is causing the problem. Everytime you delete something, immediately perform a Soft Reset to see if the PDA will come up in normal mode.

OH MY GOSH IT WORKS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much for being so patient with me!!!

I have come to these conclusions:

1) It is possible to backup data via backup module from the Edge to the VDx

2) Version 1.6 of the stowaway driver does NOT work with the VDx, use version 1.5

Thanks again!!!!!!!

Just to recap:

To get this to work you must:

  1. Backup edge w/ backup module
  2. restore on VDx
  3. Start VDx
  4. Do a warm reset on VDx
  5. Delete keyboard
  6. do a softreset
  7. beam over keyboard 1.5 from edge to VDx
  8. enable keyboard

Glad to know you got it working. Sorry my instructions were not more clear the first time around. I might have saved you some time.
