Question

Hello,
I want a backup utility for my Deluxe and from what I can gather it's a toss up between Handspring's Basic Springboard backup or BackupBuddy. I have access to a PC both at home & work (for backup).

Can anyone point me in the right direction please ?

I would strongly recommend the backup module.

To the best of my knowledge other backup programs/modules are not able to capture ALL of the memory. For example a common problem will be for a program like ultrasoft money, all the transactions will be backed up but the category will lost during back up.

This was at least the case with the memplug according to a thread a while back.

I have a back up module for my VDX and it has worked perfectly. I have even had good luck backing up while about 8 hacks were enable including Afterburner 3.0u.

The only problem I have had was that with springboards if you remove them or add them too quickly, or at the wrong time ala during a programs load time, they can cause a reset. In some bad cases even a hard reset. This would happen for any backup module though.

Good luck,
Kg

I seem to notice that the resets don't happen if you keep the visor turned on, while you remove the module.

Has this been others experience?

re: backup, I have backup buddy, but have never been completely satified. I just got the memplug but didn't know about the ultrasoft money (quicken?) bug. THAT would bug!. I'm going to email landware, makers of pocket quicken right now!!!!
BUT the backup mod has NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER failed me. And believe me, I have tested it. I currently have 250+ apps on my Vpr 8 hacks, plus the memplug and alot of experimenting. That's palm talk for many 1000's of resets. And successful only for the fact of my b/u mod.

I won't ever give up the backup mod.

Another available option is JackBack. This can back up to either a flash module (8 or 16 meg), or a CF card (in a MatchBookDrive or Innopocket adapter).

I use this with my MBD CF adapter, and it has a schedule function that allows (guess what!) scheduled backups. You have various backup options (all files, selected files, memory image, etc.) and it compresses.

Cool Both

I always recommend both as a failsafe.
However, if there is a choice to be made, the Backup module would be my first choice.

I highly recommend the Backup Module. I own it as well as the MemPlug. When I got the MemPlug I was fully prepared to pass the Backup Module to my Dad so he could use it on the Visor Deluxe I gave him. Before I got around to giving it to him, I dropped my Prism. Still worked, but the power button went flaky. Fortunately, I have the BestBuy extended Warranty so I got a new one. Put the MemPlug and used PiBackup to do a Restore. Everything "looked" okay, except none of my AvantGo channels were there. Put it in the cradle and hit the HotSync button to get my AvantGo channels and then WordSmith had problems. WordSmith would no longer sync up. Finally performed a HardReset and used my Backup Module to restore the Prism. After that, everything worked great. No problems with WordSmith and all my AvantGo channels were ther.

As a side note, other users have reported similar problems with PiBackup not restoring everything properly. As much as I love my MemPlug, I will NEVER give up my Backup Module.

Dang,
I thought the piBackup feature of my memplug was 1/2 of the justification of the cost.

I too, wanted to give my b/u mod to my husband along with my PERFECT retired Vdx. It was a lifesaver for me.

I thought the memplug would replace the b/u mod function.

The piBackup function has just 2 options EXACTLY like the b/u mod. There is backup. There is restore.
How can there be missing files?
I will email them and get the answer in writing and post it here.

thanks for the heads-up BEFORE a disaster struck.

Here's another vote for the backup module.
