Wireless email/browsing

I live in Nebraska, VisorPhone doesn't have service here. Anyone have any other ideas for wireless web access (not involving use of a cell phone)?

Fellow Nebraskan!

Good luck!

I have checked out numerous possibilities for wireless connectivity, and well, they pretty much all suck.

OmniSky does not provide service in NE at all. (coverage map)

YadaYada does not provide coverage.

GoAmerica is a provider of CPDP wireless solutions, but the service does not cover NE.

TellusTechnology also makes the WipClip, but does not provide service.

I happen to have a StarTac, so I bought a cable. My cell provider and ISP is Alltel. My plan has statewide coverage with no long-distance, 450 min/mo and free nights and weekends. I just dial-up the access number in Lincoln that you would with a land line.

The best thing about the service is that Alltel has wireless coverage for nearly all of the state (YMMV).

Wireless -

I know that you wanted a solution without a cell phone, but I have to tell you my Omnisky story.

I bought Omnisky around December of 2000. I liked it for a while except that the little antenna did not work that well, so I upgraded to the Samsung that fits the Novatel. This solution worked fine for 6 months. The problem is that I always have my Startac with me AND I could not get a signal with Novatel inside buildings, moving (such as cars or trains) or consistantly enough for an enjoyable experience.

After switching from Sprint to Verizon, which in my experience works great so far, I decided to try out the 6 inch cable for Prism to Startac. Wow, I am surfing using my minutes without paying 40 a month for Omnisky. I have 1.5 megs of free space from getting rid of all of the Omnisky stuff, I can keep my Memplug in all of the time for backs and 64 megs of stuff, and my coverage is amazing. I get a signal everywhere I have been in the past month. From Chicago to Boston to Martha's Vineyard to Dallas to Houston, I have been able to check mail, update Avantgo, and find a puppy for my new wife in the Houston Chronicle while on the ferry from Martha's Vineyard to New Bedford, Mass.

I understand where you are coming from not wanting extra stuff to carry around. Just thought I would let you know about my experience. It has been pretty cool so far.

Good luck in finding your solution.
