"Lost" My USB Port

When I open Hotsync Mgr it only sees "local serial", despite the fact that I had a USB port installed on my machine. My USB cradle is the only thing plugged into the port, and it has worked fine in the past.
I think I may have goofed when I was dumping what I thought were unnecessary commands from my startup configuration. I tried running the "install new hardware" wizard (gawd, I hate that word) in the Control Panel, but it still couldn't find it.
I'm running WIN98 on a PII-266.
If you can offer any help, I would appreciate it.
