Upgrade Prism to 16mb or wait for new model?

Hey, i found some posts that said some guy does memory upgrades for Handspring Visor Prisms...and he does good work. But i was wondering, do you think its worth it? Handsprings new models are on the way...but how far off? Is upgrading to 16mb a waste...or should i just keep the 8MB module for now? Thanks...

I hear you I have a similar dilemma. I was considering upgrading my Prism to 16MB and then my recharge light went out. So I've been debating whether it's worth it to upgrade. I guess it doesn't much matter because after you upgrade I would guess the warranty is void.

So my fear is that after you do the upgrade something goes wrong with the Prism (not related to the mem upgrade) then you out $150 + Prism.

yes well...

i dont take care of my Prism anymore...i dont know why. i want a EB Slipper Prism case which looks really nice...but im getting the Minstrel S. That would make me out alot of money, you know? These days i carry it in my pocket...but i dont wear alot of clothes WITH pockets...so, if it had a clip and not a loop, i might go for it...plus it nice leather...i beleive you can use it as a wallet to.

Well, even if you waited, there would be no guarantee that the newer unit would have more memory. I have heard nothing on the boards about newer units having more than 8 megs.

I would have already upgraded, if it weren't for the voided warranty issue. My Prism is only 4 months old.

Upgrade to 16MB or not?

Hello,

I am one of the guys who has upgraded my Visor Prism the same week I got the new unit! I am not worried about warranty breaches, etc. I have a CompUSA 2 year replacement warranty.

If my unit is broken/damaged, etc. I will have Tony Rudenko remove the 16MB and reinstall the 8MB, then send the unit back to me to switch with a BRAND NEW one at CompUSA. Then I would send that brand new unit to Tony again, for the 16MB reinstallation.

All that work will cost me approximately $80. I wish I had a Surface Mount Soldering/De-soldering machine.

Anyhow, if the problem lies in the screen, charge light, something small, then I will swap out the unit myself at CompUSA(I know lots of guys there). By swapping, I mean changing out all the components except the board with the 16MB memory in it.

Stan

about the CompUSA "TAP"

I have the same thing, 2 year coverage...but now they say its over because i just got my unit replaced (the paint was wearing off, and i wanted a new fresh one). Whats up with that? This was the third time i had it replaced, and the first time they didnt give me any problems, nor did they tell me it would be the last time i could get it replaced. THEN, springboard modules wouldnt work, so they replaced it again, and told me this would be the last time i could replace it, and that the warranty was void afterwards. So tonight, i bring it over...and my father works it out with them. They give it to us, but threaten that its the last time i will get a replacement. They showed us in the little booklet where it says that if they replace a "peripherial" (like a computer mouse or monitor) then the obligator...aka CompUSA...has done their duty and that the 100 dollar warranty is over. Thats crazy! Anyways, how do you feel about that? nowhere in the booklet does it say that PDA's only get replaced once. whatever, they must be pretty stupid to replace it 3 times for me. Thanks....

also, my dad said that if they give us a hard time next time, were going to bring them to small claims court for a few dollars...my dad is smart, and knows we will win.

but its only over a 400 dollar product, so, it wont run CompUSA out of business, but me spreading bad rumors about it might, because their true. their service sucks. and thats the bottom line.

CompUSA, sucks doesn't it?

Well, I have several friends who work at CompUSA and we do favors for each other. The good thing about the warranty, as I was told by the employee(not friend) there was that I can use the warranty to my disposal, that there was no limit to exchanges, no questions asked, and best yet, if I purposely broke the PDA, I still can get it exchanged for a brand new unit.

If you bring the PDA back in the original box with ALL original documents and items(case, cradle, etc.) they will give you an even exchange for a brand new, unopened unit(was planning on doing so to sell the brand new unit, unopened on ebay or something.

If CompUSA doesn't comply with their written warranty, you may contact the Better Business Bureau in your area.

Let me know,

Stan

Lightbulb re: Upgrade Prism to 16mb or wait for new model?

Why not try getting a memplug (CF or SM) module to upgrade memory? I am getting my CF one soon and as I have a free 64 MB CF card, whoo hoo! 72MB of free space!

Memplug or 16MB upgrade?

Basically, I want more space that will not compromise the user of my Visorphone. I do not want to unplug my VisorPhone, then stick in another module just to play games, etc.

But yes, the Memplug is a great idea, as I plan to get the Smartmedia version for myself in the future(I have a digital camera that takes Smartmedia and I would be able to view the pics on the Memplug when travelling). I doubt I will be using the Memplug that often, only during travel when taking digital cam pics. But I'm hoping the price of the Memplug may come down a bit? Or maybe they can make the software a bit more bug free?

Stan
(already using 9MB out of 16MB on his Prism)

Upgrade now, buy later. Rampant consumerism - it's the American way.

I am still in business

upgrading and repairing most of the Visors/Palms/iPaqs.
There are no plans to retire, we just added more repair/upgrade services.
