Question

In a discussion on City Guides, Yardie mentioned "no wireless" in Canada. I'm not sure I know what that means.
Does this mean I should stop drooling over the Visor Phone module 'cause it won't work up here yet?
Say it ain't so (sniff!)

Lightbulb ya, but

my understanding is that, yeah, we won't be able to use omnisky or minstrel, et al, but the visor phone module should work just over the digital cell phone channels (GSM or CDMA, whichever is around) that already exist here, sort of like a wireless dial-up. i'm from alberta and i sure hope it works that way! am i on the money james, based on your understanding?

Well I don't claim to know everything about cell phones, but if Canada uses the same cell system (GSM, 1900 MHz), it should work(TM).

Of course, the phone would cost an arm and a leg if not bundled with a service provider.

According to Handspring it will cost $299 minus $20 rebate if you bought the Visor directly from them.

That is $299 with service. It will be significantly more expensive if you buy it without signing up with of their service providers.

That price is absolutely insane (without service plan) and is the reason i will not be going with it.

However, prior to finding out the price without service plan, i emailed Fido (a canadian wireless company) who wrote me back this:

"Actually, the VisorPhone being a GSM 1900 MHz handset, will work on our network.
All optional services available such as data services and PCS email can be supported through our data service, and other customized options.
Our marketing department will release information about new services or handsets at the very last minute for strategic reasons. Therefore, we can not answer your question as per working a deal with handspring."

if you want to visit fido's web site, it's at http://www.fido.ca/

hope this is of help.

It sure is, thanks. But I think you're right about the price point being way too high to reach the majority if users. But what do I know about Handspring's user demographic?
I guess we'll have to watch and wait for prices to fall (,eh?)

Thumbs up Wireless in Canada - by Reflex

Bell just announced reflex network in Ontario and Quebec. Coming to western part of the country end of year. You will have to use Handilink(also known as @ctivelink) for your wireless needs.

I was only able to find a novatel modem for Palms. I sent an email to their sales dept. asking about modules compatible with the VDx.
It's a shame that they don't seem to have a search button at their site.

The VisorPhone is a standard 1900 MHz GSM phone and should work fine with Microcell Connexions and its various provider permutations including fido, cityphone, and SiMPRO.

However, the thing will cost CAD$750. One solution may be simply to buy a Nokia 8890, which is a much nicer phone in some ways including the fact the thing is so tiny. This phone should be able to communicate via infrared with the Visor Prism and Platinum directly, and with the other Visors with extra Ir software installed. Furthermore this phone has both GSM 1900 and GSM 900 support, so it can be used overseas. Unfortunately, this thing costs even more, at $850.

actually, i'm looking at the new neopoint phones (www.neopoint.com) as i've used the 1000 and thought it the most intuitive interface on a phone that i've ever encountered. unfortunately, the 1000 was/is only available thru bell mobility in canada and i hate ma bell and refuse to give them any money whatsoever.

i did call neopoint though and ask what was going on with canada and their new phones and they said they've dumped bell as their service company in canada and have just signed with telus. they are waiting for crtc approval (though they said fcc on the phone) for their new phones. to my knowledge, telus just bought clearnet, so this could be good news.

i have not used the nokia 8890 but the neopoint was a sweet phone and is cheaper.

Question Any Updates?

Any updates on whether or not we are going to have wireless access in Canada? I am green with envy after seeing all these people posting about their omnisky and yada yada.

Goamerica has not responded to my email. Maybe if they get one from another Canadian user(s) we'll get a response?
