Question

I'm going to buy a PDA. My options are Visor Edge and m500.
I would appreciate some help on one or two questions. Is there a real advantage on having an upgradable OS PDA?
The fact that the Edge is faster than Palm is an avantage in a day to day use? In Portugal there is no retail center with Handspring's stuff so I only know them from thr net.
Thanks for all the help you can give!
Obrigado!

Well, first of all, I have both (M500 and Edge) and to be honest I like them both. Edge feels better in my hand than the M500 (it feel solid) while the M500 is lighter. I kinda don't like the sled that you have to put on the back of the Edge in order to use the springboard so in that area I think Palm has the upper hand. A lot of my friends say that the Edge looks cooler than the Palm (especially with the metal case on). Functionality wise, they pretty much the same to me. I mean the Palm has the OS 4 but I hardly use any of those stuff (vibrating alarm, better security, etc.) so I hope this helps a little.

I thought the edge and the m500 were running the same processor. Has Palm not removed those waiting states that made the deluxe faster than the IIIx yet?

Anyway, I'll list the pros of each (as I know them)

m500
vibrating alarm
Flash RAM

edge
fast look-up
advanced datebook

And depending on the use for and pervasiveness of your expansion needs, the edge may or may not have an advantage. If you only need memory, the m500 does well w/o sacrificing the all-important form factor (I'm thinking it will only be a matter of time before memory is made available for the edge connector). If you need anything else, the edge takes the cake.

To answer your Flash RAM question: I've always considered Flash RAM to be pointless. The OS upgrades have rarely offered anything worthwhile (esp. considering the price they've been offered at). I've only been proven wrong once (4-bit grayscale support for the deluxe and solo). Even OS 4 would be a pointless flash onto a Palm V because you'd need to get a new cradle (which isn't even made) to utilize the biggest feature: USB sync-ing support if you could do it at all.

Well you gotta go with the Edge for looks. As the ZdNet reviewer (I think) said, Edge has sex appeal!

Wear some shades, have a silver mobile (new Samsungs, Sony CMD-Z15 or S40 Siemens) and whip out your silver Edge. Go ahead make that guy with the Palm look down and pretend he doesn't look like a geek.

What I've noticed so far is that there is nothing quite like a red Edge. The idea of an aluminum PDA in such a shocking color is just beyond most people's experience with handhelds. (BTW, I'm in an area where there's just not a lot of tech savvy.) Can't beat that for cool!

So, I'm loving it!!!

The silver Edge just has that "designer" look about it that goes well at formal company or client meetings, or at a nice restaurant. It looks classy and doesn't look like a toy.

And best thing about it? It does a heck of a lot more than a Nokia 8850 handphone which is about the same price. Looks and functionality is something that I go for. I don't like trading one for the other.

Now where are those Edge modules?
