quote: 2. If I am mostly going to use this for travel, should I get a phone based on my home area or get a national plan. If the latter, can I get it based on a service that isn't based here? In other words, can I get my "home" number to be local at the major airport I am at most often - even if I live elsewhere?
Dunno how things would work in an area the size of the US (w/c is where I presume you are), but national plans could be more expensive. What I do know is that if you choose a local carrier and you have to use the phone outside that area -- e.g., when you travel -- you'll have to pay roaming fees. Carriers are vague, albeit rightly so, about how much exactly you pay because they can't speak for their roaming partners, and you may have to ask around. Having said that, I've seen a few of the US carriers' plans and don't see too much variance in rates.

Sure, that's the idea of GSM. Just the other day, my biz associate was having trouble with his phone. I took my SIM out of my phone and put in his SIM. We was getting SMS messages and voice calls meant for him, on my phone. He had to make a few calls, and it was his SIM that was getting the charges, not mine, even if he as using my phone.
Regards.
