What the hell, I'll ask a serious question in this thread

I'm going for quiet with my computer, yet I also want to watch tv on it. Do I
1.) Go separate video card and tv tuner card (Sapphire makes a quiet version of ATI's 9600 and 9800)

2.) Get an All-In-Wonder and a Zalmann video card heat pipe?

I got a cheap (AUD89) Spirit tuner that does the kob...
Advantage of a dedicated:
-you can update your videocard without loosing your TV
-with combined card you teld to give in on quality on either the TV card or Video card.
downside:
I just used my last PCI slot...

Another advantage to having all-in-one is you're not running the tv signal across the pci bus, usually resulting in a better tv experience. Plus, with the cards I'm looking at, I end up with a better card.

Then again, having separate cards can mean better multitasking, as well as costing slightly less and voiding no warranties. PCI slots are no concern.

Specifically, I'm looking at this and this vs. this and this.

I have used both types before in the past and I found that the all in one devices tend to play nicer with each other.. especially if this is a PC we are talking about, drivers just love to reek havoc with each other, especially if the tuner isn't made by the same company that made the video card..

For what its worth each way has its own advantages / disadvantages.. YMMV

my 2 cents (actually worth approx. 1/4 cent now) is to go for the ATI All-In-One plus the Zalmann.

You could also try insulating your box if it's still not quiet enough for you.

Once you get rid of the fan noise you're going to find out how loud your DVD, CD-Rom and your HD are...

Isn't ATI coming out with a better ALL-In-One? I thought I had read about it in CPU last issue (August)

Another thought, What kind of multi-tasking are you talking about? Watching TV while playing Unreal?

Won't that be more a function of your RAM and virtual memory?

Unless your planning on some kind of multi-monitor set-up.

Enquiring minds want to know....

I just figured listening to tv while playing a fairly non-intensive game would go better if one card wasn't trying to show it all.

I could very easily be incorrect.

I use the card from Creative Labs. It isn't the highest quality, but the interface is much better than anything else.

If you are (incorrect) I have no way of knowing. I thought that you could only have one video card operating at a time.

I could also be incorrect. I'd hate to see (figuratively) you buy one setup and end up not being able to do what you wanted to do.

That's why there is eBay, let it be someone else's problem.. get back some (if not all) your cash and try again..

Well at least he can recover his money.. his time is a whole other issue.. I thought you had only implied the cost of the card(s).. I agree with you on time wasted.. perhaps a slight "markup" on his eBay sale vs what he actually paid will compensate for lost time ..

Yep. Yellow-dog distro. Very nice. Then I gave the mac to my missus and she wanted the original OS.

Philistines.

I know the all-in-wonder will do what I want, I'm using an 8500dv currently with a zalman heatsink. It over-heats when doing anything too intensive, hence the upgrade. I am worried about the separate cards doing what I've come to expect from the AIW.

Oh, and my time ain't worth $&#@.
