I'm a "might be" Visor owner to be. I'm sure leaning that way instead of Palm VII, especially considering what possibilities exist with the springboard modules.

I'm curious about what wireless solutions anyone is using for real-time email and/or "beeper" (paging) solutions. I have read about Innogear and Cues upcoming springboards, but I'm curious what is out there today and works, how well it works and what the services cost vs what I'd be paying (45 a month) with a Palm VII.

There is nothing for the Visor at this time.

If you can't wait for the Visor's wireless modules, then you might want to consider a Palm III (pick the version that fits your needs) with the Merisel (sp.?) wireless modem. Tap Magazine thinks the combo beats the VII.

The visor is ok, but the company moves way too slow for me. I am selling mine, as there is no serial cable.

The Visor made sense as it had 8 megs of Ram. Now, I can get a IIIxe with ram and accessories galore...

The VII doesn't make sense, as it has 2 megs of ram...

To elaborate on yucca's information: Novatel's Minstrel Wireless modem is available in both a Palm III and Palm V version (I don't know whether the III version will fit the Visor).

From what I can tell from the photos, a Palm V fitted with the Minstrel still has a smaller form factor than a Palm VII. Another advantage to the Minstrel is that it browses in real time, as opposed to the Palm VII limitation of PQA-enabled (web clipped) websites. Moreover, the Minstrel can access those PQAs.

Personally, though, I think I'll hold out for Glenayre's two-way pager until a better Springboard option (from Novatel perhaps?) emerges. Wireless web access would be nice, but I'd be satisfied with wireless email.

If you're gonna get a Palm, don't get the Palm VII, rather the Palm Vx with modem. The Palm VII is bigger than the Visor. The Visor looks cooler too. Although I gotta admit, I like the looks of the Palm Vx better than the Visor. Except that you don't get an expansion slot. Also, you get more bang for your buck with the Visor.

I enjoyed my Visor Deluxe, but I can't say I was thrilled with it.

The screen was good, the speed was good, battery life so-so. But, no wireless modems, no gps, no Win2000 support, slow development cycles on the Springboard functions, and the last call... no damn serial cable.

Now, I move on to a IIIxe, with serial cable (so I can use the GPS), with the 8 megs of ram. I do say the button on the visor are better, but they are after all just buttons.

I am buying an Minstrel modem for it tomorrow ($99) and service from $20 - 50 from GoAmerica. Pretty soon I will have it all together.

I wish they would have been better about getting accessories out, I would have kept it.

Go with the best solution at the time. In my case, I had to change from a Visor to a Palm...

Best of luck in your search, just don't get the VII, as one with 8 MB of RAM will be out before too long.

Thomas - You weren't willing to roll your own cable were you? Or perhaps I'm thinking that you are someone else. In any event, I can't say that I blame you; as you shouldn't have to go to this length for a generic serial interface.

For any lurkers, there is a company that sells a diagnostic Springboard Module; and there was some discussion about using this to interface with routers via telnet on the Module board. If it can be used for this purpose, it should also work as an expensive general serial interface.

Lurkers can also reference the thread on using external modems for connecting a serial cradle to a modem.

earthlink wireless

I contacted earthlink and they said they support wireless access with visor delux. I would have my PC thru landline and visor accessing the net (visor in wireless) am I getting BSed?

How are you connecting wirelessly?

Do you have a wireless module like Visorphone or Minstrel S?

Maybe they're assuming you have a wireless network and have a wireless module in your Visor, then you can connect to Earthlink.

I don't think you can access the web unless you have some kind of module. I've got the Visorphone and Minstrel S. I do recommend the VisorPhone.

Novatel offers the Minstrel S for Visor owners. It works with the
Deluxe (with shielding added by Handspring who will swap a non-
shielded Deluxe for a shielded one), Platinum, Prism, Neo and Pro.
Nothing for the Edge, yet.

Handspring has offered a serial cradle from day one. Do you want
a serial cable without the cradle? I can make one for you. If you
have already changed units, sorry I was late.
