Angry

This is a problem I think that only Mac users will be able to help with, because of the Hotsync software.

But you're welcome to help!

----
Speaking of which... HELP ME!!! My Hotsync manager has gone insane! It first started out a few days ago, when my Visor and my desktop simply WOULD NOT connect. Because it was my Visor that was crabbing about it, and my Mac acted like normal, I'm pretty sure it wasn't with my Visor. Then, I went to the "Users" folder, and moved my user folder into a "safe place" (an online HD and deleted it off of my system) , and did a hotsync. It worked... partially. The hotsync died halfway through because it took so long. But it wouldn't hotsync again after that!

This time, I decided to uninstall my ENTIRE Palm Desktop Software, and re-install it from the ground-up on my HS CD. (I had been using a "MacPac" I had downloaded from the net.) Well, I set it up, and I hotsynced it. It pooped out in the middle, but at least it worked. Then I went to my memo pad. Nothing.

To make a long story short, my Hotsync Manager and my Palm Desktop software are fighting. The Palm Desktop software will NOT sync with my Visor, so the only two things that work are backup and install.

I need help. I think the problem is with my Hotsync manager, because the Palm Desktop Software keeps claiming that it "Does not exist."

Any help will be appreciated. The person/people who solve my problem get a free copy of my software, 3tip deluxe (wait... it's already free! ) ... ok.. I'll add your name onto it!

But pleeez! I need help!

Is the name of your Visor listed in Palm Desktop?
Under HotSync menu, select User, it should show the name and "edit users."
By removing the users folder I think you may have confused it, though I'm not sure.
Might also check for the Palm Preferences file. Some Mac problems can be solved simply by deleting the Prefs file for whatever program is hassling you.

alternatively you could try a clean install of the whole Palm desktop package, but you'd want to hunt down any related extensions and pref files before installing.

Exclamation Some Enlightenment!

No. My Visor's name is NOT listed under Palm Desktop. When I go to: "Edit Users" , it says the file cannot be found.

I have also done several "clean installs" , and none have worked.

I think I found the source of my two problems (not hotsyncing & Palm Desktop incompatability), but I still need a solution. Here's what I have it trace down to:

1) New HD Layout with OSX,
When I had my Desktop Software installed, it was with Mac OS 8.1 . Since then, I upgraded to OSX. (It still worked pretty much normally.) When I recently installed Mac OSX, my computer was mapped much differently. I think this could have something to do with it. But I don't know what to do after this.

2) Re-appearance of my old files:
I know that this IS a problem. Even though I've supposedly done "total uninstalls" from my HD, my old user profile (and name) keeps appearing in the same folder "Palm" on my Mac HD. To help offset this, my Palm Desktop Software is now in a folder titled "Handspring" , but each time I re-start my computer, that damn folder is still there, and i have to drag it to the trash to be able to HotSync.

I was unable to find a Palm preference. Is there one? Would help very much!

I appreciate the help! The sooner I get this done, the sooner poor ol' ToolkiT doesn't have to put up with me!

Well, I had expected you were still on the older Mac OS. I've not used X, because I'd rather they get all the kinks out of it first

When you pull up "Edit Users" you should get a list of users (in your case, an empty list), and buttons for a new user & a new profile.
I think if you put your user info in again it would help.
Once you have a Username available, you can check your conduit settings and turn them on.

I don't know if X uses Prefs and Extensions the same way as 8.6 would have. Since there isn't a Palm Desktop for OS X yet, perhaps it's a problem related to the Classic environment.
For OS 9.1 and below, there should be a "Palm Desktop Info" file in the Preferences subfolder of the System folder. I just went and looked; there's also one for HotSync, and "User Data ... TF" which is marked as a "Palm Desktop file." Plus a Palm Desktop Support App, whatever that's for. (as an aside, gawd I have a lot of pref files.)
I have no idea what's causing the recurring files.

Hope this helps.

Cool Thanks!

Ok, I'm gonna look for the Palm Desktop Prefs file, since I think that's the root this problem... well, at least one of em!

My problem with my Palm Desktop, is that whenever I go to "edit users" , I get an error message saying "File not found."

I have to go into my Hotsync manager to edit them. But the changes do not appear in Palm Desktop.

The problem I have is coming from the re-arrangement of OS9.1 that OSX has done, since I only sync my Visor when I am in OS 9.1

Thanks so much for your help!
We'll see how it turns out!

hmmm ...
I see that the folder for my username on my computer includes the files "User Data" and "User Data Archive".
You did say you deleted the original user folder after uploading it to an online archive.
Just thinking out loud, dunno if these are significant.

Cool Hoora!!!

Yorick! You fixed it! Congratulaitions! Everything works fine now!

I had to delete my Hotsync prefs, and then the Palm user file! They now recognize eachother perfectly, and I was able to re-sync my Visor! Hoora!!!!
