Well, I am pretty impressed with my Thincom modem that came today. If fact I'm writing this message using my Visor and the Thincom and my Stowaway keyboard! I thought that browsing the web would be lame but it is ok. Anyways.

Update on the Thincom....

Everything is working great. I hate the dongle. I want to leave the modem in my visor all the time but what's the point if I have to carry around the 6 foot long dongle. I'm going to buy a few more dongles and modify one so that it is about 2 inches long and put a phone jack copuler on one end. Then I can cary it around in my Visor case and still use my modem when ever I need to.

If any one is wondering this modem can NOT do fax yet. There will be a software upgrade later for it.

So instead of using the phone cord that comes with the modem, you are going to turn it into a real dongle with a coupler on the end (like to see that fit in the case) and then hope that there is an extra phone cord wherever you are going?

At Radio shack you can buy a small coupler that is very small and thin. I use a Palm belt case and should have no problem putting it in the bottom of my case and my Visor on top. (Yes I'm a nerd, I wear my Visor on my hip)

For the phone cord I will use one of those retractable dealy bobs that will fit on my key chain. I always have my keys with me.

Just an idea. I haven't done it yet. But I have been having a lot of fun with my modem though!

Its too bad the connector for the Thincomm is so wide that it interferes with the use of the Handspring case. I like using the case to protect the unit from damage if it falls to the ground.

When I looked at the pictures before ordering it, I thought it had a normal RJ45 connector on it. I measured it based upon the pictures and it looked like it was far enough to the side to stay in the Handspring case.

Turns out to not be true. Might look at modifying the case though so that it still fits...

I'm interested in what cases fit that would work for placing on a belt though.

I should be getting the Thincom any day now and can test it in Europe (they said it was designed to work in Europe but not "certified" here). I will let you all know who is interested.

I used my Thincom modem during a recent visit to Ireland and experienced no difficulties retreiving my e-mail, surfing the web, and maintaining my servers using Telnet while there. It all worked like a champ!
