Big EFFING ads?!?

What's the deal with the big effing advertisements on this site sometimes? Hlaf the time it's a normal sized banner, and the other half of the time it's this ginormous thing that's double size in both dimensions, totally hosing the formatting of the page in my browser, even at 800 pixels wide!
I've been putting up with it for a while, thinking it was a glitch. Maybe it IS just a glitch, but I'm sick and tired of it. PLEASE look into this problem and fix it. I really hate having to scroll sideways just because of some frigging MiniJam ad that's much too large!

If it makes any difference, I'm on Win 98se, running Opera 6.0 as my default browser.

Actually, I have a 19" monitor at 1600x1200. I just hate to have a single browser window taking up the entire screen. I prefer to have Opera on half, and Eudora on the other half, with various other apps scattered around. As such, the browser is always at 800 pixels wide, which, imho, is even TOO wide to allow web pages to be formatted to. I personally think any web site that can't look good and function properly in a 640x480 window needs to be redesigned, but more and more sites need at least 800x600. That's fine by me, but a banner that forces a page to scroll sideways when the page works fine with a normal sized banner is unacceptable. Is there anyway to force down the size, or hard code it so that all ads appear at the proper size? It's not like they're different style banners or anything. They're all the short and wide banners. I'm guessing they're placed on the fly, though, by some SSI or other similar code, and the image size attributes can't be controlled by the web site.

Hehe, true. A website should look nice no matter what browser or resolution you use.

Take a look at my review (see sig). It looks like I just barely pass the "no scrolling" test at 640x480...

I am using IE6 at home and IE5 at work and see it all of the time at both places. It seems to be specific ads, namely the new Wells Fargo ad and the Minijam ad with the mauve background. It is REALLY annoying to have to scroll to the right.

I'm looking at this thread with a MiniJam ad that's too wide ...
Thing of it is, if the ad were the only thing at the top of the page, it would work. But, most websites (including this one) will have their logo first, with the ad next to it, and the rest of the page is dynamic to the width of the browser window. So the overwide ads basically hijack the width.

This would be easy to fix. VC's ad people or service just need to notify InnoGear that their ads are overwide, and they need to be changed, or (insert ultimatum here).
(Like that'll happen. Users of a free service don't generate revenue, ad sales do.)

* update: while and after making the post, the page was a "regular" size. while making the post, it's someone else's ad. after & while writing this update, it's the MiniJam ad -- shrunk down to fit the appropriate width.
and, on viewing the *edit* it's back to the big f'in MiniJam ad.
Does the ad suffer from schizophrenia? or is its Viagra wearing off/kicking in? what's going on?

There are two different "king sized" minijam ads, one with a mauve and one with a green backgound. In addition there are two identical "normal" sized minijam ads (same text, image, and backgrounds). When you right click on the ads and select properties, the link to the "king sized" and "normal" ads are different.

BTW, I like spidey. Are you going to do anything for Attack of the Clones? How about the skull with Jar-Jars ears or maybe an Amedala head dress!

I just noticed a lot more room at the top of the page. I guess that this is to take care of the problem with the extra large ads. It is a shame that VC had to change its page instead of the supplier of the ads changing the ad's size. It does eliminate the need to scroll to the right. Thanks!
