My biggest complaint about the Prism is the graffiti. aCCURACY REALLY SUCKS. I am used to writing about 30 word per minute on my old deluxe with a very high degree of accuracy. Now I can't even write one word on the Prism accurately. Is there any way to bypass Graffiti (apart from the soft keyboard)? Tealscript perhaps?

I have seen a number of people recommend lowering the brightness to increase graffiti accuracy.

Unhappy

I feel your pain yardie. I have the same complaint about mine. I used to could really crank out the text using the grffiti on my Deluxe, but now half of the letters come up as something else or not at all. I now have to write them very big, exaggerated, and slowly to make sure they come out accuratly. Hope this is something maybe they can fix witha software patch or something.

And here I thought it was just mine. I was going to send it in for a replacement. Does anyone else's have trouble recognizing screen taps if you tap too quickly after switching apps?

Can't believe my 75-year-old mother is more techno than I am. She just got her Prism this week and I had a chance to check it out today. Overall it's a terrific PDA and I've got to get one...

But...(and it's a BIG BUT), I need some assurance the Prism's Graffiti feature can work as effectively as it does on the other Visor models. I consider myself highly competent at Graffiti, but today I couldn't complete a word on the Prism without major hassles. Frustrating and discouraging.

And I'm hearing others are having similar problems. I can't believe Handspring would release a product that whimps out Graffiti-wise, so does my mom likely have a defective unit, or is this a major glitch in all Prisms? Any official word from Handspring? Anybody return their unit for a replacement? And did the replacement do a better job of Graffiti?

Lightbulb Aware

Maybe we should all make Handspring aware of this problem and come up with a possible solution.

Wow, I'm so glad that you guys have made these posts. I thought 'I' was doing something wrong. I have been seeing international characters coming up during my Platinum writing, that I have never performed before on my palm. I thought it was just me, but I don't think my writing has changed since 1996!

Now what?

Actually, I'm noticing that the graffiti area is more sensitive. Maybe this is a good thing...

I was wondering about this same digitizer issue today. I don't use graffiti any more as I use FitalyStamp which is a keyboard overlay and a hack that you install.

I can't get FitalyStamp to return the letters reliably even after de-installing all other hacks and other programs that could be interfering with the timings.

I went back to my Deluxe to check how accurate my tapping was there -- it was like night and day!

The tapping all over the Prism seems a little suspect. I haven't been able to figure out if I should press harder, press longer, or just return the Prism! Based on some of the notes here, maybe it's a common Prism problem though.

Turning the contrast way down did not help me.

I hope someone can come up with a solution -- I don't want to go back to a mono world...

I don't know if I would equate this the "tap bug" that was fixed in Palm OS 2.x but here's a URL where you can find info on that http://www.geocities.com/SiliconVal...54/tapbuga.html

Question

I'm also having a problem beaming apps. When I try it says "There are no exchange libraries available." Also in prefs I am unable to turn my beam recieve to "on" (it's highlighted but still displays off after I've selected - it's not the digitizer). Any suggestions?

Try soft resetting your visor and see if you can beam again. If you have IRLink, make sure you don't of the IR redirected.

That worked beautifully, thanks!! I forgot I had warm resetted my visor to see if that helped my grafitti recognition and forgotten to soft reset afterwards to get it back to normal. Thanks a bunch!! Speaking of soft resetting has anyone else noted that the 3 invisible shortcuts don't get copied onto the prism after a soft reset? That's wonderful! No need for dbscan anymore.

Question TealScript

Has anyone tried bypassing Graffiti with a third party solution such as TealScript? I am curious to know if there is a difference with recognition. I haven't received my own Prism yet so I cannot test this.

Kalahari:

I would hate to go back to mono too. Color is just too sweet.

Yardie

Has anyone tried bypassing Graffiti with a third party solution such as TealScript?

I have TapPad hack and overlay on my Prism and this seems fine. Here's what I've noticed relative to my Palm Vx -
1. Graffiti is a little more sensitive to making accurate letters.
2. Regular WriteRight's not designed for a Palm IIIc make the issue worse.
3. WriteRights designed for a IIIc seem to improve accuracy.

Now I'm not up on this post to promote anyone's product over anyone else's because I get paid too. I just report my impressions. I'm in the automotive industry so there shouldn't be any conflicts.

I had a IIIc and noticed that the graffiti was not as forgiving as my Palm Vx. The Prism I have is touchey but with a TapPad overlay (middle caps hack as well) and a WriteRight over that as long as I right big, I can't really complain.

I hope that everyone else that is having problems can either have Handspring resolve them or obtain useful information here on these posts.

Unhappy Tap Accuracy

I've been noticing bad tap accuracy working with RsrcEdit in my Prism. (I've been colorizing all my icons :^). )

That was fixed in OS 3.3

Thumbs up

I have been using my new Prism for three days now and have not notice any problems with Graffit or tapping accuracy.

After considerable testing using FitalyStamp and using Graffiti, I determined that the digitizer on my Prism is performing erratically. For approximately 20% of my taps/strokes in the Graffiti, the digitizer was returning the incorrect result/character. I even did a hard reset to ensure that there was nothing loaded on the Prism that could be affecting Graffiti recognition.

Handspring is sending me a replacement.

kalahari...

When you called to request a replacement, did the Handspring rep say whether this was a known problem? It seems too many people are complaining about it for it to be an isolated incidence.

TIA,
David
