Talking Credited my account

They were sending me a replacement Minstrel S anyway, so I called to check up on order status and asked if I could get $170 back. And I did! =P

Smile

I followed up on the email I received and it appeared that I was being offered a free modem but only if I purchased a Palm or Handspring PDA! Well - I was mistaken!

The selection of a PDA was OPTIONAL! This was masked by the fact that once I selected the PDA, I could not change the contents of the "cart". It took three tries, but I am now a happy camper with 12 months of service and a free modem on the way.

Customer service responded to my first complaint and they were quite helpful. I felt they really went out of their way to make sure I had a pleasant buying experience. They have also been responsive when I called to get my modem set up properly.

Wink no bait and switch

I had no problems placing a order for the 'free' modem. They
had a option to purchase a bundle, but that was just a option. Did you enter the promotional code?

Its a sweet deal....the only catch is you must sign up for a year of service at $39 a month. Fine with me.

Here is a copy of the email for those that missed it.

------paste------

Dear YadaYada Member,

Here's a special holiday gift from YadaYada: a FREE wireless modem for
your Palm (V or Vx) or Handspring Visor (Platinum or Prism). That's
right, FREE. Just go to
http://www.yadayada.com/DESKTOP/redirect/email14.asp and enter
promotional code R8U74 on the order form. It's our way of saying
thank you for being one of the first people to try out YadaYada.

Normally priced at $299, this FREE wireless modem will connect your
PDA instantly to the Internet. You can take advantage of the latest
features of our Wireless Web service, such as sending and receiving
email in real time and accessing virtually any Web site in the world.

Go to http://www.yadayada.com/DESKTOP/redirect/email14.asp and enter
promotional code R8U74 on the order form. Within days, you'll receive
your FREE wireless modem, along with special YadaYada Software to
connect you to the Internet. In exchange for this free modem, all
you'll need to do is sign up for 12 months of service (only $39.95 per
month for unlimited wireless service and no roaming fees!).

Thanks again for using YadaYada!

hey folks. all this free modem stuff has me interested all of a sudden...but i have a VDX, not a prism or plat and i seem to recall some issues with one or more of these modems and reading that they only work on prisms and plats. or was that just the omnisky one? so, some questions:

are the go america, omnisky and yada yada plans all using the same minstrel hardware?

do some use CDMA and some CDPD or what?

does the yada yada one work on a visor deluxe? (it's plugged into a blue VDX on the yada yada page...?)

can you use this type of service for palm VNC?

how about palm ICQ?

and hey, geekforhire, when i actually initiated the sign up process here, http://www.yadayada.com/DESKTOP/mai...trStatus=SIGNUP it looked to me like i only had to sign up for six months.

(1) Yes the hardware is the same - Minstrel S, but the software is different. Go America and OmniSky only work with OS 3.5. YadaYada, however, works on my Deluxe with 3.1H3.

(2) It uses CDPD though Verizon. The OmniSky uses ATT Wireless.

(3) I have used the PDA ICQ software on my deluxe. AOL and AOL IM, however, don't seem to work with wireless modems.

(4) What's "VNC?"

What's "VNC?"

'virtual network something.' computer or connection maybe? it allows you to dial into a desktop at home or whatever from another terminal and operate it remotely, sending files, emails, whatever you want. palm VNC allows you to do it from yr palm. pretty cool, actually, you see your desktop on your palm at whatever size ratio you want. i've used it from the road with my VDX and my thincom wireline modem a number of times to access files and email them to myself, then grab the email off the server and voila! i have my file on my palm.

is AT&T wireless CDMA? i'm canadian and we don't have AT&T here.

Bottom line, will this work with my Visor Deluxe? Do i need an update to use it, or won't it work at all? It looks like a good enough deal, but i am not gonna run out and get a new visor to use. it.

Thanks,
Veq

Yes, it does work with Visor Solo or DX, or PR/PL models.
I wanted the wireless so bad last month, that I ordered the modem at 150 bucks. It took a week because of the Holiday, but when it arrived i had reached Geek Heaven. I only had the Visor, but still got some signal. I called Hand and finally got them to send me a correced RF Visor, free of charge. Waiting and waiting, I finally called back, wondering what the hold up was. They told me the corrected Visor was BACKORDERED! Man, this almost made be lose it! Would I get the fixed Visor before my 30 trial was up with Yada Yada? Well, not wanting to wait, I went out and got a Platinum (PQA's do work after some fiddling). My wife got the old Visor and she was very happy. This week, the new Visor came, so I pried the old one from the wife, and handed her the brand new one( a few beams, she was happy again). Today YY credited me the modem cost, and I'm also very happy with my Platinum and YY service! GO FOR IT NOW!!!

I just got an e-mail response back from YadaYada, telling me that they would extend the offer to existing customers. All I have to do is call customer service and they will credit my account the $149. Of course, I just called (1-888-YADAYADA) and it just rings. Not even voicemail?

Yes, the Deluxe works with the YY service. I posted earlier about problems with the Deluxe [crashes and so-so signal], but after getting the optimized one from Handspring it's only crashed once in many hours of use and the signal is great in the LA area. I even took it into a market when my girlfriend made me go shopping with her and got an awesome signal as I pushed the cart with the back of my hand, surfing the whole time. I'll probably still get a Prism when I can afford it [I want my PQAs!!], but bottom line is that it can be used with the Deluxe. I'm happy

I called Handspring last night to request a new visor
for use with yadayada and they had a 'new' unit out to
me the next day. Pretty impressive...esp since I called them at around 5pm.

I should get my minstrel s from yada tomorrow, I will report back and let you know if it works with the VDX.

Cust service from Handspring was not sure...they said that it works fine with some...not at all with others. Hmmm...OK...

They didn't answer because you dialed the wrong number. Their number is an 800 number, not an 888 number! I got the $149 credit with no problem whatsoever. The guys in tech support have been great; which is more than I've heard about Omnisky's support. Another important distinction is that Yadayada supports Macintosh, and Omni doesn't.

Red face I have to send away my visor deluxe?

So i spent ALL this time babying my visor and carrying it a bed of feathers and now i have to ship it away and get a new one? possibly a refurb? or is it "new" new?

can I change the color since they're sending me a new one anyways? Im sick of blue. I want green or orange now!

What kind of "optimizations" do they do? I already have afterburner II installed.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Lightbulb Creative clicking...

I did the "Creative Clicking" as well, if you notice on the second to the last page of the order process it changes the 6 months to 12 months.

Is it just me or sometimes does a company hire people for customer service and never inform them of selling benefits?

I called Yada Yada to see my possibilities of returning the modem is my signal is never found, and seeing how to get a 6 month service package as opposed to 12. So be it, only 12 monthes is possible with this rebate and you can possibly return it if certain situations present that you have never been able to use it...

But, the guy on the phone denied certain items:

1) the Handspring Visor Deluxe will almost never be able to work with the Minstrel S. I told him I broke my screen last month and that I requested an optimized Visor be sent out. He said that might not work either.

2) I asked about storage possibilities on the module. He said that there is only enough space to store an IP address and TCP/IP stacks. THIS OFF NOVATEL's WEBSITE:

Compatibility
The Minstrel S is compatible with the Handspring Visor and equipped with a TCP/IP stack for custom applications development. The Minstrel S is equipped with 2MB of flash memory to host your favorite applications.

4) So now I am worried about this one. I asked how long it takes to ship... 5-6 business days. Is this for real?

Smile New Modem Promotion

I, too, subscribed to YadaYada back in early November. When I received the promo email, I call customer service and told them about my situation. Mike (the rep) was very helpful and agreed to refund me $149 for the modem and change my original contract of 6 months to 12 months.
