The archive folder is for files previously backup but then deleted from your Palm device.

Normally, the system conduit will copy any file on you Palm device that has the back up bit set and does not have it's own associated conduit to the backup directory. If during a latter Hot-sync, the system conduit finds that a file that is currently in the backup directory is not longer on your Palm device, it will move the file from the backup directory to the archive directory.

Note: This applies to the latest version of the Hot-sync manager distributed by Handspring. The earliest version did not have an archive directory. It would leave files deleted from your Palm device in the backup directory.

There's no need to... it's just a repository of apps and data files that were deleted from the handheld. The \Backup folder contains the current set of apps and data.
