Amusing story - Visor? What's that?

I was training someone today at work on how to use our computer system and different software applications. This person is female, about 33 years old, and has been out of the work force for about 10 years raising children. I was going through all of the different applications she would be using, when she saw the icon for the HotSync Manager and asked me what it was for. I told her it was a program associated with my Visor. "What is a Visor?" she asked. I told her that a Visor is similar to a Palm Pilot, only better. "What is a Palm Pilot?" she asked. I was stunned - literally stunned. I asked her if she was serious, and she said that she didn't know what I was referring to. So, long story short, I had to get my Visor and show her all of my neat Visor tricks (no doubt the highlight of our training session). She had never seen anything like it before.

I was truly amazed at her reaction. I remember how shocked my grandparents were the first time they saw it, but that was to be expected. This woman is 33 years old - how could she not know about these things? I did not consider PDAs to be "new" technology. I just figured that those who do not have them don't have them because they have no use for them. I was obviously wrong.

No point to my story - I just couldn't believe the whole situation and thought I would pass it along.

was answered by your previous comment:

Her kids will probably get one before she does.

But keep evangelizing - my wife bought me one for last Christmas, and once I got my VDX, she got my old one back and hasn't put it down since.

Once they get some finger time on one, they'll go for it. Especially as cheap as they are these days. And if she's re-entering the workforce, how much geek cred would she get for having one? More impressive than toting around a Franklin planner...

different strokes for different folks. i'm not that shocked. hell, i'm 33 and you should see the looks i get when people find out i've never seen any of these tv shows: friends, seinfeld, late night with jay leno, conan o'brian, survivor... basically, any show that came on after 1987 except simpsons and south park.

i also would not recognize any songs by any of these people: amy grant, celine dion, backstreet boys, christina agliera (sp?), brittany spears, limp bizkit, eminem, etc etc. again, i shut my radio off (1988) and never turned it back on again. no doubt i've heard one or more of these people sing while walking around town (supermarkets, record stores, car stereos that are too loud, whatever), but thankfully, i've been ignorant of what it was.

on the other hand there are people in the know on certain things. you, it happens to be electronics. i'm sure your 33 year old friend has things dear to her you've never heard of.

for me, the music that makes life bearable (and that i can't imagine never having experienced) is made by the likes of modest mouse, silkworm, smog, songs: ohia, magnetic fields, palace, bonnie prince billy, joel rl phelps, the american flag, handsome family, godspeed you black emperor!, belle and sebastian, aden, lambchop, kingsbury manx, john zorn, john lurie, etc etc.

i'd wager the majority of people on this board have never heard of more than a couple of these artists, if any at all. but they're as much a part of my life as your visor is of yours.
