Visor Neo and Pro to be announced Monday

Read:

Looks like a major dissappointment. Both are just repainted and upgraded Visor Deluxe/Platinums. Big deal!

quote:
The $299 Visor Pro will come with double the memory of most current Palm OS handhelds. The $199 Visor Neo is essentially a renaming of the 8MB Visor Platinum, although the Neo will come in three colors. Both the Pro and the Neo feature grayscale screens and use the same design as Handspring's current Visor Deluxe and Platinum.

Yawn!

On the positive side, it appears that the Springboard will stay around a while longer. That's good news to me.

Not much incentive to upgrade...

Now that I have VFS Helper (thanks David Kessler!) and a pair of CF cards, there is not much incentive for me to upgrade my Prism. A 16MB Palm OS 4 color Visor on the other hand, and a family member will get an (ab)used Prism.

Yes this announcement is a yawner. But you have to realize that these models ar replacement for models that are already out..namely the Deluxe and the Platinum.

While neither of these will motivate me to dump my Prism, you have to give Handspring some credit for coming out with the first 16 mb Palm OS device.

Now, if they'd just do it in a slim form factor with a hi-res color screen, then I'd be all over it.

What a letdown. I don't have any immediate plans to upgrade from my Prism, but I would at least like to be tempted.

For people looking for a First PDA:
-good
For hardened Visor-heads looking for a worthy upgrade:
-bad.

I like to see that the 16MB model Visors are here. Remember how exciting the news of the affordable 8MB Palm device (Deluxe) was?

Question I just don't get it...

Sorry, folks, I just don't get it. Color can't be the best improvement option for a PDA. Added memory makes the most sense, but I think I'd sacrifice even that for an upgradeable OS. Handera's attempt to improve screen resolution and their multiple power options seem to be a better direction that Handspring might want to consider.

Give me a B&W screen I can read, the ability to upgrade the OS, the option to power-up with batteries I can buy at any gas station, and a chassis that can't be crushed, even in this fat boy's pants.

What would be the point of having Palm OS 4 on a Visor?

I thingk Handspring know exactly what they are doing. They will survive one way or another. These new devices will have great appeal to newcomers. Remember the Deluxes are still Handspring's BEST Sellers after two years. These are meant to update the Deluxe (and eliminate the Platinum).

I will not buy another gray-scale HS and will wait for the color model to come out. I will stay with my Platinum and my FlashPlus using VFSHelper.

Well the units do look very nice. But I can never go back to greyscale. Even if I get the Treo 180K I am still going to keep my Prism until Handspring releases an even better color unit.

Handspring is making a tragic mistake by not adopting color. The irony is, HS admitted the Edge was a mistake because it was overpriced and lacked a color screen. So now they are correcting that mistake by introducing even more greyscale devices to the mix? This smells like a recipe for failure to me. When you take into account the fact that sales are down, the economy is sluggish, Springboard (as a platform) is dying, the current (and forthcoming) products are boring and unexciting, company stock has no value, and after several years in business HS has STILL not turned a profit...I think this company is going to capitulate. Handspring has the look and feel of a "dot bomb".

It sad but this continues to reinforce my opinion that Jeff Hawkins is a flop. He has about as much innovative drive and creative energy as a 95 year old nursing home patient. One thing is certain. These "new" products aren't going to save the company.

Nope, the new products are not going to save anything. As I said in the picture thread, they must have taken at least two or three days to think up and develop.

...but maybe it's just there to bring HS back into consumers minds, what with the anniversary.

I would be surprised if HS didn't have a new color device in the wings.

...do you suppose they had planned on announcing this week?

Is the Pro another painted plastic case? I was hoping for a metal case and a virtual graffiti area. Oh, well.

These are not the most inspired new designs that I have ever seen.

Wait, that's because they aren't new designs. All the the NEO is (literally) is a Plat in new colors for $199. The Pro is just a Plat with 16 MB and rechargables. There are no other differences.

I guess that when you are too tired (or broke) to innovate, you change colors. Apple has gotten away with it for a number of years, but at least we up the clock speed, memory and OS version.
