Question Spring PCS and 3G?

From the Handspring website:

"As Sprint PCS implements Third Generation technology nationwide by 2002, customers can utilize the Digital Link to enjoy a richer data experience with speeds up to 144kbps. A software upgrade for the Digital Link is planned to be available with the Sprint PCS nationwide launch of 3G mid-year, 2002."

So far no one was able to tell me if the VP can be software updated.

What's the difference between the Sprint PCS and VP board, that would allow one to be updated and not the other one?

I believe that after the Treo Handspring will probably ditch the VP, therefore support will tend to nada, nihil, zero, zip

This is bad. I work for a IT company, and our hw/sw products are supported for 24 months after being phased out. Sometimes even longer (mainframes).

You should check your facts a little more closely. The SprintPCS module is manufactured by a third party, not by Handspring. It operates on a different network and contains a different chipset than the HS-branded VisorPhone. So while the VP may not be software-upgradable, the SprintPCS module may very well be capable.

Also, keep in mind that SprintPCS operates on CDMA, while VP operates on GSM. Both networks have a relatively low data-transfer rate right now (CDMA = 14.4, GSM = 9.6), but existing CDMA networks can be upgraded to the 3G technology you mention above. GSM networks, even with EDGE upgrades, still won't do better than 28.8, which is why GRPS is being implemented as an always-on Blackberry-like data service on GSM networks.

But that's exactly why I posted... I wanted to know why one would be upgradeable, and the other not. You anwser it: different manufacturers.

Regarding GSM not being able to go above 28kpbs, I have to disagree. 3G can be laid of over GSM/GPRS as well, so you can get speeds higher than this.

VP MODEM speed. I've watched mine go above 100kbps on Cingular in the SE.
