I noticed that I have like four net preferences. I thought that this file defined my dial up configuration. I do not use a modem (yet), but I do have my ISP set up. What would the other copies be? Can they be removed?

There are several Network preferences pre-defined. If you're sure you're not going to be using one or more of the named settings, they can be deleted (though if you ever do a hard reset, they'll re-appear).
