Deluxe and Solo models: 4 shades of gray.
Platinum: 16 shades of gray.

My wife has a solo, I have a platinum. The 16 shades of gray and extra speed are worth the money.
It makes a difference in many games. Photos using eyemodule look much better on platinum. Any photos in fireviewer look better on platinum.

Search the web for coupons, and you can probably find a Staples.com or Amazon.com coupon to bring down the list price of a platinum considerably, perhaps to deluxe model price.

The deluxe does display 16 shades of gray, but the OS doesn't know it. If you only want the grayscale to view pictures, download Album to Go and you're all set (because Album to Go bypasses the OS). If you want to change the color scheme for your icons you're up that infamous crick without your oars. I'd say the $50 is worth it for the platinum. The only thing the platinum lacks is a good paint job, but we don't need to go over thatagain. So to answer your question, "Yes and yes, definitely."

The screen hardware may be slightly different, but the eyemodule does display in 16 grays on both Deluxe and Platinum.
