A company in HK created this 16MB Visor Prism. Here is a pic of it.

Question Effect on Batteries?

Does anyone know the current drain for memory in both the Prism on and off states?
Is it different for memory that has actual contents to maintain?

Two questions...

1) does anyone have any experience with this company? (quality of workmanship, shipping, turnaround time, warranty, etc.)

2) I've seen lots of posts and replies on different aspects of the Flash ROM on Visor matter, but I'm still a bit unclear. This company, and I believe TRG, sell Flash ROM upgrades for Palms and RAM upgrades for all PalmOS devices.
(Here's a pic of a palm IIIx with upgraded ROM *and* RAM - http://www.palm-center.com/pic/Palm/12MB+4MB.jpg)

If adding a new board for RAM is possible, is there no means of adding a Flash ROM *board* to a Visor (Platinum, in my case)?

If not, is the inability to provide an upgrade to Flash ROM on Visors a matter of missing flash rom support circuitry, lack of room on the board, some kind of software limitation, or a combination of the above?

Chinese Translation...

My chinese sucks (nonexistant) but the site says that they guarantee that the power drain and heat from the upgrade are less than the memory that Handspring uses. They claim better battery life with the upgrade. In the first 2 weeks they will fix it if there is a defect in 2 days, and in the first year there is a warranty they will fix it in 15 days.

Exclamation I would love to have 16mb's on my Prism

I wonder why not many people are doing the internal RAM upgrades? It would be a whole lot more practical to increase the internal RAM than increase storage by flash module, since some data cannot be stored in flash memory. I have heard about the the upgrades from 2 or 4mb's to eight, but not 8mb to 16mb. Didn't I read somewhere that the current palm OS can only support 8mb's internally?

Question i was wondering the same thing

Yes, how did they get passed the 8M limitation? It's interesting that someone's doing this, but I'd be more excited if I had details about how they hacked around this limitation? Anybody have any idea?

Memory limitation

They're only offering the 8 --> 16 upgrade on Visor Platinums and Prisms. The new CPU these devices have can address 16 MB of memory. The previous limit was hardware-bound.

It seems like a good deal, i'm just concerned about warranty and the logistics of shipping my new toy to Asia with a guarantee I'll get it back unchanged except for its additional memory.

Is it clear that this upgrade will allow full use of the 16MB just as the base 8MB? no storage/usage limitations like springboards and CF cards?

BTW, anybody have any ideas re: my question about the addition of a Flash ROM board?

Cool Are you sure OS 3.5 and the CPU can support 16mb?

I have not heard of that capability before. I agree that having an extra 8mb internally is a lot better than a flash module with 8mb. I wonder if the internal memory upgrade would put a limitation on the amount of flash memory module the Prism or Platium can handle. Wouldn't it be great to get 16mb internal and 16mb flash module...32mb's on a Palm devise!!

Question need more info

Can someone more hardware-oriented ring in on this? I would like to know what the limitations were and what changed.

I wonder how that would affect the backup module.

Wow, that's a great question. I'm sure that the backup module only has 8MB of space, so how would it work with a 16MB Visor? Even if it could backup 8MB out of the 16MB internal memory, how useful would that be, especially since there would be no way to specify what parts of the internal memory you would want to backup?

Red face Dude...I never thought about the back-up module

I guess the back-up module could only back-up 1/2 the data, since it's only 8mb. Yes, I would love for someone more hardware oriented to comment on this. I have e-mailed both of the company above, Hong Kong and Singapore, but so far no reply yet.

The PalmOS can "address" up to 2 Gigs of memory. But you were right, the memory limitations were hardware bound.

i should have thought of this a few weeks before christmas! set up a simple website in a completely different language. Tell people to send thier Prism's to my P.O Box (because i'd only settle for a few prisms ) and just sit back and watch the free PDAs come rolling in! And even better, only tell people in a completely different country so that they can't do anything legal to get me because their laws wouldn't work in MY country!

wow, i'm a little on the slow side....

oh wait!! tell them to send ~$60 with their Prisms so that I can buy a nice case and stylus for each one!!

Red face Ha Ha..that'll be one heck of a scam

Yeah, I thought about that same scenario also. I guess it is possible. Man, how silly and dumb would you feel giving your $400+ Prism away! That's a BIG "D-OH"!!!

RE: Hoser

In RE: Hoser's comment, aren't there any US-based soldering-gun jockeys that have the know-how for this?

Well, I'm in Canada, and I've upgraded plenty (read: 30) of Palm V's, IIIe's, IIIx's, and III's...All I'd need is to see a close-up pic of a modified board (I presently have a platinum). If I could learn the mod, I'd be willing to provide the service for the cost of the chip and shipping back and forth. There are many such individuals in Canada and the US...It's simply a matter of getting the Colonel's secret recipe...
