Bye Bye Visor Prism

Actually, its just moving over the the wife who likes it to play games on it...

I picked up a Sone Clie T615...

Except for duller looking colors, everything else was a win... 16mb ram, more memory via memstick (128mb on the way now), slimmer, metal case (got the blue one)....

Waited for Prism II but it never came....

As for the springboard... the only module that I've ever consistently used was the backup module. I can do the same with a memstick.

Keep us informed, krel!

You'll have to let us languishing Prism power users know how well the T615 handles any hacks, desk accessories, security programs, etc. you have loaded onto your Prism. And what about the hotsyncing and screen mapping woes I've heard of?

Doubling my on-board and on-card memory sounds pretty good right now, but what about going wireless?

Good question, I'd like to know as well. That was a major factor in getting a handera; I just assumed the clie line would be more expensive (if even possible).

I'm with you...

Blue 615c and 128MS is on the way for me as well. I'll give the Platinum to the wife and she'll give her OVDX to the daughter.

Seems there is a pattern developing, shame HS abandon it's most fanatical userbase.

I picked up a T615C about three weeks ago and I live it. My most used module was the MemPlug, but the MS takes care of that. I now have a laptop, so I can check e-mail and internet when I am on the road.

I never thought I would buy a Sony, but it is a nice form factor and the extra memory is nice. The price of MS are finally coming down, so this is a great deal, for me.

My wife now has the Prism, but I have not decided what to do with the old Palm IIIx.

I just don't get it: $299 New / $229 Refurb?

I'd like to upgrade my Platinum to a Prism, but for $$$.

I like Handspring. My Platnium has served me well. But,
the cost of upgrading to color? Crazy.... Not with the m150
and Clie's and other such...

Is it just me? I know about the Treo, and I am waiting for
the Color Treo at this point. But, given the dwindling support for Handspring in local retail, and now the Prisim taking an almost Apple zeal (err Steve Jobs) in pricing, I have to really consider if I want Handspring anything right now.

How do others feel?

thanks,
henry

Prehaps some have some alternatives, or have seen something
about a Color Edge... or in general, have some ideas that I haven't thought of?

Maybe some others have some views of Handspring I'd be interested in hearing?

Do you have anything to offer?

Smile I just purchased a refurbished Visor Prism

After giving it some thought as a present Visor Platinum owner I decided to go for a Visor Prism and upgrade it's memory to 16MB. The reason I want more memory is b/c I seem to be maxed-out when using AvantGo and having my TeleComm apps in RAM.

I have yet to receive a good working unit from Handspring. 1st unit had a broken digitizer, 2nd unit (replacement) LED charging light doesn't go on (I tried soft reset, in-cradle reset, hard reset, etc to no avail). I'm currently been waiting over a week for my 3rd unit (2nd replacement). Hopefully they get it right this time. I already have a Brando screen protector and even in the Hawaiian sun I can see the screen with the protector on, it does a wonderful job.

I considered the Sony Clie units (even the new ones released today) which are pretty cool but:
* No native Macintosh support (I know there's MissingSync)
* Can't use CF cards (I use a MemPlug CF and I'm a photographer)
* I already have a cable for connection to my StarTAC for Wireless
* I already have a Targus keyboard
* More additional gizmos available for the Prism over the Clie

I will probably use the Visor Prism till it dies and/or Palm OS5 gets all the bugs worked out and they (Handspring, Sony or Palm) come out with a nice OS5 color unit based on an ARM processor.

Nope.

There has been much discussion about the possibility of a color edge should the treo prove unsuccessful. Fact is, if the treo is unsuccessful, HS is done. They can't compete with Sony. The best they could hope for would be to have a better unit for a couple of months until Sony takes their idea and improves upon with a unit that costs less. They would've had the springboard slot to fall back on had they not pissed that advantage down their leg. Of course, it's only too late once you're out of business.

To get back to my original point, none of this matters. Buy what you need or want when you need or want it and let the market respond. Although, if you can't think for yourself, letting the opinion of someone smarter than you count twice is a nice thing to do.

I think Sony & HS are different paths

Sony & HS aren't quite competing directly. If you want a cellphone with the capabilities of a Palm OS unit then the Treo is the way to go, especially when the color unit comes out. The Sony units must be connected with a cable to a cellphone and even then it won't have an integrated phone dialer.

Sony gave-up on th cellphone business after getting spanked pretty badly from the llikes of Nokia and Motorola.

The Visor Prism should be kept at the same price-point as it is now but offered with 16MB of RAM.

I like the Springboard slot but it looks like HS doesn't see much of a future with it. Seems like the most popular things for SB slot are: memory and modem. If the Treo offers 16MB of RAM (better yet, make it take MMC cards) and built-in wireless modem that satisfies most people.

Just my thoughts, nothing based on reality.

Now Dick, please be nice. Asking if anyone has heard something new that you may not have, is not the same as not being able to think for yourself. Attacking people that come to this forum for help will only kill the forum.

Yikes, Josh! Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed? Asking for others' opinions is an appropriate thing to do when evaluating a course of action. Some of us actually care what other people think.

Question Sony Compatablity

The Sony Clies that I have seen in the stores all have a problem with software of some kind. Games show up interlaced and split screen, or half screened. I am curious what apps the clie owners are using, and if they run well on the higher res screen.

I don't think that came across as intended. I was not trying to tell him he was unable to think for himself, just that other people's opinion mean exactly jack. What does your opinion matter when your pda needs are inevitably different than mine? Do the research and buy what you need. That's all.

Did you forget about the visor line? That is in direct competition with the clies - and where (rumor goes) HS will fall back to if the treo flops. It is also the arena in which Sony has the distinct possibility of flogging HS roundly.

However, I think most people would agree that part of one's research can correctly be soliciting other people's opinions. When I am looking at something I want to know other reactions to it. This then becomes an integral part of my own research.

Precisely why Consumer Reports is still in business. I think Josh's point (don't mind me while I speak for you Josh) was that PDA's are SOOO subjective that other people's opinions may not really help in the long run.

Unlike, say the 2002 Toyota Avalon that I am lusting after, on which Consumer Reports can help me with the objective facts: displacement, torque, etc. (Y'all didn't know girls knew those words, did you?)

I don't think that makes any difference. Even if we accept that PDA's are solely a subjective judgement and that people don't want to know memory size, expandability, etc. I would still want to know how people feel about the usability of different models. I can then use this knowledge to make my own decision.

You're auto analogy is IMHO is not on point. You can find out displacement, torque, etc. from the manufacturer's brochures. You don't need to ask other people or check out Consumers. Cars are probably even more subjective than PDA's. Just look at America's love affair with the auto.

I'm not saying that one should not make one's own decision(s) based upon what someone else says is "the best" of anything to buy. What I am trying to say is that the opinions of current and past users of anything CAN be of use when you are trying to make your own decision.

Off this topic, you will love the Avalon, a close friend of mine got one a little while ago and can't stop raving about how great it is.
