Finally upgrading

Well, I've finally decided to upgrade and get a Visor Deluxe.

I've been pushing my USR Palm Pilot 1000 with professional upgrade to its limits for a little while now. So, I bit the bullet.

I really haven't been paying attention to trends in software/hardware for these things for a couple years now. I was quite happy with my couple of little hacks and bits of share/freeware.

Anything I should be aware of? Avoid?
I've been reading all sorts of stuff, and it looks like this will be a huge step for me (if only the increase in memory).

I Don't Like Hacks

I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer to stay away from hacks. I've read too many posts here about conflicts with them, and other stability issues surrounding them. I can't afford the time to "fix" my VDx. So if I buy software, I stay with more established third party developers like Hands High, DataViz.
I'll ask, since I know someone will -- you bought a backup module, RIGHT?
That's my .02, and welcome to the community.

If you haven't already bought it and it is possible, upgrade to a Platinum.

It is faster processor and has the 3.5 OS. This gives you, amoung other things, greyscale and the ability to use some of the memory expansion options you can not presently use under the 3.1 OS.

I would agree that the first thing you should be aware of is this: buy a Backup Module. This is probably the best $40 you will ever spend. I have only needed once since Nov 99, but I was really glad to have it when I did. My co-worker just bought one after a complete memory loss (note to everyone else: when your batteries are practically dead, just plugging in the FullCharge adapter will not let you use your Thinmodem+ indefinately. Let the batteries charge up a bit, then check your e-mail). If nothing else, the piece of mind of having your data safe and a short Restore away in case something untoward happens it worth $40.

As far as hacks go, I use Hackmaster and am quite error free. I don't like to operate without MiddleCapsHack and TealEcho. They just make things so much easier.

The first thing I did when I stopped using my Pilot 1000 with Professional upgrade (with the new battery cover so you could use the IR. I remember the days. Now it has a cracked screen and liquid crystal everywhere. Very sad) was to load up AvantGo. Load up that 8MB right away! Who would have thought offline web browsing would be so useful? Movie times, newspapers and all sorts of things are available.

Depending on how much work you do on your Palm, you may want to look into some "office" type applications like Quickoffice, DocumentsToGo, or WordSmith. I use Quickoffice, but a lot of people really like WordSmith.

Gotta second that. OS 3.5 and the processor speed are certainly worth the $50 US premium over the Vdx.
