That probably means that you two have the same usernames, and syncing two devices with the same usernames to the same computer is just asking for trouble.

I recommend that one of you change your username, either by using a program like Palmname or by doing a hard reset, creating a new username in the Palm Desktop, and hotsyncing.

If I use that program (PalmName), how are my registered programs going to work? Will I have to pay for them again or what cause I know that the code that they gave me when I bought them was contingent on my user name.

They won't (or at least they won't stay registered).

You'll either have to get a new code from the software developers, or buy a new license. I would not have recommended this course of action to an experienced user who's registered many programs, but I did to Bridon because: (1) he's only posted twice, so I guessed that he probably hadn't registered anything and (2) since his wife has the same user name as he does, he can pass on any registration codes of his to her after he changes his user name. I doubt that you'd want to do the same.

Need different Windows profiles

I had the same problem - Deluxe and Clie. I couldn't sync both - even with different usernames (Palm Desktop for both), because Sony and Handspring have each "enhanced" their HotSyncs. Sony's wouldn't recognize the Visor, and Handspring's wouldn't see the Clie. I sent an email to both Sony and Handspring.

Sony's response:

quote:
Thank you for contacting SONY.

We at SONY's Customer Information Services Center are available to assist our customers in resolving technical issues with the SONY CLIE Handheld. We cannot assist you with the initial configuration, import of third-party data, or the development of software skills.

Inside your "READ THIS FIRST" booklet (page 38), please note that you have free "Up and Running" support available from (970) 522-4610, Mon-Fri between 6am and 5pm PST. You also have access to our dedicated support websites..."
(blah, blah, blah - there was more...) Lot of help they were... NOT.

They "cannot assist" me with "development of software skills"??? I doubt they intended to sound insulting, but I took offense. I'm not stupid, and can follow directions pretty well, but when I read the booklet, all it said was, "If the Palm Desktop software is already installed to your computer, please uninstall the Palm Desktop software and install the Palm Desktop for Sony software." Well, that's all fine and well for the Clie, but left my Deluxe (and any other PalmOS) out in the cold. Hence, the email.

Handspring, on the other hand, came through for me:
quote:
Thank you for contacting handspring.

In order take different handhelds owned by different people and synchronize them to multiple PIMs, (ex. Joe's Visor Prism to Outlook 2000, Caroline's Visor Deluxe to ACT 2000) two or more distinct Windows log-on user profiles should exist. See Microsoft Windows Help files for detailed directions on how to set up additional log-on profiles.

Here is an overview of how to configure Windows for two separate user profiles who wish to use Outlook (User#1) and Palm Desktop (User#2):

1. User#1 uninstalls Palm Desktop and PocketMirror if they are already installed.
2. Use the Passwords applet to configure a separate Windows profile for User#2:
i. Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel | Passwords
ii. Select the "User Profiles" tab.
iii. Select the "Users can customize their preferences and desktop...." radio button.
iv. Check the two check boxes within the "User profile settings" frame.
3. Log into the computer as User#2 (the Palm Desktop user).
4. Install Palm Desktop.
5. Log out of the computer and then log back in as User#1 (the Outlook user).
6. Install Palm Desktop in the same folder as the installation in step 4. (No files will be copied; the only changes made are to the registry).
7. Install PocketMirror by running setup.exe in the PocketMirror folder on your Handspring CD.
8. From now on, the two users will have their own unique synchronization configurations with no data overlap. Other PIMs could also be used given the correct third party conduit software.

Thank you,
Handspring Technical Support

It was actually pretty easy. Hope it helps. (I gave up the Clie to get a Prism, but I really liked the little machine. Too bad my only experience with their customer service sucked.)
