Ok, so I'm sitting here nearly drooling, waiting for my Prism and my wife's Deluxe Blue to arrive via the Big Brown PDA Truck. This will be my wife's and my first Palm device. Previously (past 6 years) I've been on a Sharp Wizard OZ9600II 512K and the wife was on a paper planner .

I ordered WriteRight protectors for them right away to protect my little investments. Then I got a neat idea!

My wife has rolls of Rubbermaid shelf liner contact material that is semi-gloss or matte clear vinyl. It's even peelable. I wonder how well this might work?

quiet - don't tell WriteRights

This is one idea that you are probably going to have to try to find out the results. Depending upon how sticky the film is will be the issue and of course the legibility through it.

Watch the sticky just to see how easily it can be removed because if it's too sticky then you might leave a residue or worse - damage the screen. I'd suggest using the wife's Deluxe to try.

A lot of people just use scotch tape on the graffiti area and don't complain. Me - I want more protection and since I've spent 450 bucks on a Prism $20 bucks a year to protect the screen is no problem.

Go to Wal-Mart and in the fabric section get a roll of clear vinyl. It's 87 cents for a yard and can be cut to fit the screen. They last longer than the WriteWrights, are smoother to write on and are waaaaaaaay less expensive. I used the WriteWrights for almost a year until I got my Prism. The WW for the deluxe caused the light from the display to refract due to the textured surface. Very annoying. These cheap ones are crystal clear. Only problem is they are a pain to install w/o getting air bubbles underneath the film. Try it!

Gadget. Have you gone through a few generations of that WalMart material? Just wondering how easy it was to remove or if it left any nasty residue after removal. Or, worse, that it "lifted" or flexed the screen upon removal?

I use 8 gauge vinyl from JoAnne Fabric. No nasty residue, no lifting of the screen that I noticed. And you can't beat the price.

Anybody consider Saran wrap? it's cheap and it has been holding up well on my blue VDX. The plastic wrap clings to the screen easily and it doesen't interfere with text input.

I applied a WriteRight on my Vdx the moment I opened up the box.

Went to Walmart yesterday for XMas shopping and walked past the fabric area. Then I remembered gadgetguru's post. I bought a yard of the clear vinyl for 87 cents.
When I got home a used a credit card as a template and cut the vinyl using a utility knife. I trimmed a little off the top and with some trial and error and a few drops of water I was able to get the vinyl to stay on the Vdx.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Easy off, no residue, no scratches, smooth writing. Brilliant!...and cheap.

It's like buying a new Visor! Thanks gadget!

I know WriteRights are expensive, but I switched to the clear ones (for the color Palm) and am very impressed. The first I've used has been on for three months with no problems whatsoever. It's only beginning to show wear in the writing area.

Everytime I read about a homemade solution, it seems that application/removal is a serious issue. If I can gets months out of a WriteRight, I think I'll "stick" with them. (Of course, until they're driven out of business by frivilous lawsuits from he-who-must-not-be-named! )

I also use Clear Vinyl, and I love it! I havn'e tfigured out how to apply it with no bubbels(sp) even using a "squeagee" but they are realy nice. The feel of them, combined with there soft touch is like nothing other. Writrights fells just like a normal screen, this feels like paper.

The law makes it illegal for anyone to actively induce infringement.
The unauthorized first sale of a screen protector is illegal because it induces infringement
without authority. If the buyer resells it, that second sale is also illegal. It is that simple.

Home-made vinyl screen protectors work wonderfully. Besides protecting the screen without blurring, they last forever (I have been using the same piece for over 2 months now.) They also really enhance the "feel" of the stylus on the screen.

Disappointed

I have been looking for Writrights for the Palm IIc for my Prism since Christmas. I finally gave up and ordered them directly from Concept Kitchen. 30+ dollars and a week later, I have them, but they have some sort of sticky residue on them- all of them. I didn't have this problems with the last pack of PalmIIc Writerights I used. The ones I just got blur parts of the screen so much that I am having to risk my screen by leaving it naked for now. Anyone else had this problem?
