Should I get Visor Edge??? Help!

Hey Visor Edge owners... question... should I buy a Visor Edge? Is it a good pda for a first time pda user? Any drawbacks? Any problems I should be aware of? I'd appreciate the info and feedback. Thanx in advance. I could be getting it tomorrow for a very cheap price. thanx again.

Edge purchase?

I recently bought an Edge. I had a Visor Deluxe, but I wanted the Edge because it is smaller and slightly faster (I use the Visor with a keyboard to take notes, and the CPU speed makes a difference in the screen keeping up with your typing). I am satisfied so far, but I guess the question is whether -- in view of the lagging support from Handspring and the inability to upgrade your OS -- why you should not consider a Palm instead. I stuck with the Visor because I found the comparbly priced Palms more difficult to read.

IMO, the visor edge is an excellent first time PDA. You get a great flip cover that negates the need of a third party case, you get an excellent stylus (YMMV) so you don't need an aftermarket stylus, the size with flip cover is bar none, the smallest out there. For a first time PDA user, you basically get everything you need "out of the box". Oh, did i mention it looks awesome!?!

If you're a geek and wants a PDA to 'play' with, I suggest you move on to newer palms or PPC out there as the edge doesn't have much in terms of expansion and multimedia (springboard enthusiast, don't jump down my back for that). But if you're just a regular joe, that needs a PDA to organize your life, I would say the Edge is a very good deal and a very good organizer.

And I have to stress that the size of the edge is a big factor in it's usability. Because it's small, tough, and light, I brought with me all the time like a second wallet (smaller even). I found that i was pulling it out to use it at times I'd never imagine (subway platform, grocery lineup, car, etc etc...)

Downsides (in general, not in comparison with other PDAs): Fatal Exception error resulting in endless loops of resets, static electricity shocks through cradle (killing desktop), stylus rattle, loose screws, oxidizing buttons (silver buttons turns yellow), no memory expansion, greyscale screen, reverse backlight,....

Thats about it... =) But i stand to my claim that it's the best "out of the box" PDA.

I should explain my rational in saying all those 'downsides'.

Fatal Exception Error: This was reported on the board since the edge first came out. People's edges would suddenly need to be softrest, but would then be stuck in an endless reset loop. Hard reset didn't help. I'm not sure how many edges this affected, but i'm sure it wasn't that much. It only sounded like a lot cause those people were the most vocal on the forums.. =)

Static Electricity: The edge (due to it's metalic case) can build up a static charge that can get discharged through the cradle and kill your computer (if the usb port is not properly grounded). this happen to a lot of people with dell computers. and It also happened to me once (made my self built computer rebooted and fried my video card).

Oxidizing buttons: With heavy use of the buttons, people's natural oils from their fingers would cause the buttons and the stylus to turn yellow. No amount of scrubbing or cleaning would turn the buttons to their pristine silver look.

Loose stylus, screws: Some people complained about this. pretty easy to fix

no memory expansion, greyscale screen: I just prefer a color pda with memory expansion (considering my use). as a first time pda user, I didn't notice the need for this for the first year I had my PDA. and I consider myself a 'power user' so I was always looking for ways to push my palm to the limits.. I quickly found that greyscale and memory were frequent limits I just couldn't break.

Reverse backlight: Hard to explain why this is bad. Let's just say if you try to use the PDA at dusk or in "low" light situation, you just *can't*. A good example would be a movie theatre before the lights dimmed.

boy.. that's a lot of *****ing.. =)

anyways, I went from a visor deulxe to visor edge to a palm m505. If it wasn't for the palm's color screen and memory expansion, I would've stayed with the edge.

Arrow

In relation to other PDAs the Edge is a great unit -- not perfect certainly--but still a great PDA--

That's a pretty sweet deal. I loved the Edge, it's a great PDA. But I just couldn't live with the fatal exception errors, and I had to let it go. I'm still considering gettting another one, hoping the problems are gone. At $85, that's a niice deal. Where'd you get it?

Question HACKS?

Ya Know--We never had ANY trouble with Edges except for hacks---It's a very stable unit for us but it doesn't like hacks---

Wow, do you think you could maybe help me out and get one for the same price? Or maybe even a trade for it. I've got a Rex 6000, which just isnt cutting it for me, and I've got a yearning to go back to the Edge...
