but one that I used once now escapes my memory.
There is a shortcut that will tell you your Visor's "born on" date. Anybody know what it is?

Birthday
I'm not sure if this is the right one, but try shortcut-dot-6. When I did this it read 8/11/99,6:23pm which sounds about right for when I bought it.

You were able to buy one before it was announced?

I think that's just your ROM burn in date if my memory serves me correctly. We had another discussion about this awhile back...

No, I wasn't able to buy it before it was announced, but I was one of those people who threw caution to the wind and ordered one by phone on the first day they were available. I can only guess how much time passes between when the Visor is manufactured (born) and when it arrives at your home (Malaysia is a long way away.) I do remember waiting almost 2 months for my Visor and receiving it in late October although my memory back that far is foggy (which is why I bought the crazy thing in the first place.)

Yhe shortcut does indeed reflect the ROM date only. The week and month it was made can be gathered by the 6th through 9th digits of the S/N
