Talking EyeModule2 VS Targus Handcam + Need more info...

quote:
from Palminfocenter.com:
Targus Inc. has officially announced the HandCam digital camera Springboard module that it was showing off at Comdex a few weeks ago. It acts as both a still camera and a webcam. It can take pictures at 640 by 480 and 24-bit color. It has 2 MB of on-board memory and weighs just 1.4 ounces. It will be available later this week for $100 from Targus and other retailers and webstores.

What????!!!! The Handcam doubles up as a webcam and costs only $100?!?!?!

How much does the EyeModule2 cost now??? $199!!!

Also, how good is the Handcam compared to the Eye2?? What about the pixels and stuff??

*****
Guys, please give me a good answer 'cos I'm planning to get one of these OR a SoundsGood for my Deluxe...

Thanks and Merry X'mas in advance.

This thing looks to be better than the EM2, it has a swivel head on board mem and it can use the visor mem. It also has some kind of auto focus software (a problem with the EM2's) If you realy want the soundsgood then go for it if you can find it and wait for reviews to come in about the handcam. IMHO 64mb is just not enough anymore to be an mp3 player. i own a minijam and 128 is still not enough, but that's the all there is.

Question

Does anyone know if you are able to use the Handcam images for eyecontact?

You want a comparison? I have a comparison. Ole' boy @ Targus finally replied to my inquiry
http://home.attbi.com/~maxwell.house/handcam.htm
Looks like a no-brainer to me. Maybe wait and see if there is a bottom on the EM2 units soon?

The only problem that I had seen with the Handcam was there was no mention of a Visor-friendly image size like 160x120 pixels to save space. But that has now gone away. If anyone is interested, I will sell my eyemodule2 for 100 dollars plus shipping.

Good point, perhaps that explains the 2MB? May even go so far as to negate the 2MB? Would the pic be available as both resolutions? Trying to figure the reason for a "visor friendly" resolution. You telling me you would save a VGA res graphic and keep a lower res on the visor?

Never having owned or even used a PDA Cam, I have been watching the EM and EM2 units. This Targus comes out and I'm fixing to pre-order. Hopefully before long, it won't be a pre-order.

I found the best deal at http://www.kernelsoftware.com/

the eyemodule2 allows you to save an image as two formats, full-size (640x420) and palm-sized (160x120). Full sized is great to send to your computer to use but is pointless on your Visor (unless you want to save onto your memplug which is another matter altogether). So I sycn my full sized images to the computer then either delete them from my Visor or shrink them to Palm-size on my visor. I generally save images that are used with eyecontact. Saving as a Palm-sized image saves memory on your Visor when you keep them on your Visor.

The Handcam has three image sizes so thats really nice.

For those who were interested in my eyemodule2, I was j/k. For the time being I am going to keep my eyemodule2. Get yourself a handcam and have fun!

Has there been any news on Mac-compatibility for the handcam, both syncing pix and use as a webcam?

Memory Usage

Since this module can use its own 2MB Flash memory & the Visors memory, I can;t see why its pictures cannot be transferred to a memplug. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have a client who was going to use an Eyemodule & a GPS for a project documenting animal trails in Arizona, but the number of images that their Visor Platinums memory would hold was not sufficient for the number of photos they would be taking. I had hoped to find away to easily transfer the images from Visor RAM to the Memplug, but it does not work smooth at all. Maybe this Targus camera will make all the difference!

i would be willing to bet money that they wont. MAYBE someone might write some 3rd party conversion software, or you could sync your targus pics to your desktop, and then use the eyedrop exe to put them back on the visor in the eyemodule database.

Hi, I can sort of speak to that. I have an Eyemodule 2, and a while back I bought a Higiwara 8-meg flash module hoping that I could transfer Eyemodule 2 photos onto it when I was out (so that I'd have room to take new photos).

Unfortunately, no dice -- the Eyemodule 2 treats your photos as one single database. I think the db file is named something like BurkeVGA, and there's no way that I've been able to find to simply extract a few single pics from that. File mover apps only see one huge clump and not the individual photos within the file.

If the Handcam handles photos as individual files that you can move instead of one big db clump, I'll be first in line for it. I'm a little suspicious of sub-$100 digital cameras in general though.

Although I love my Eyemodule 2, the fixed focus and the fact that you need rock steady hands to use it (the slighest shake blurs pix) can be exasperating at times.

Great tip - thanks! They SAID it should be in stock and ship on Tuesday - will wait and see. I'll post a hands-on here - unless someone beats me to it. FYI, total price - including shipping - was $85 and change...

Below is pasted a link to a Targus press release. In the PR, they say "eawill be available in early December" I thought it was supposed to have been late November. I'll go w/ a PR over a news article, not that PR's are worth more than their paper (or bandwidth) to me anyway. Thought I'd pass this along.

Page at Sparco

FWIW, a place called Sparco has the Handcam down for $78.94:

http://www.sparco.com/cgi-bin/wfind2?spn=A121405

Availability says Dec. 24, but that's probably just a guess on their part hoping that they can offer it before (technically) Christmas day. I don't know enough about any of the sites being mentioned here to want to take a chance on ordering from them yet. Hopefully somebody else can be the guinea pig.

Unhappy Well, I got an answer from Targus about Mac compatiblity,

it just wasn't the one I wanted.

With regret, the Targus Handcam software is not compatible with MAC
systems.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

Oh well.

I sure hope it gets some attention around here when they are available for shipment. I'm convinced I must have one.

Maybe a belated Christmas present to myself?

Question Please help me understand...

The Targus camera seems really neat. My inner geek feels that using my Visor to take pictures would just be really cool.

But beyond that, it seems hard to justify when I noticed that you can get a Polaroid 1.1 megapixel for only slightly more than $100. Besides the higher resolution, the Polaroid camera also has a flash and digital zoom. Using Memplug, you could easily and immediately transfer your pictures from a camera into your Visor for your viewing or emailing pleasure.

How would you all justify the Targus module?

It is just a size thing - I guess. I have been struggling with this also. I don't have a memplug or a digital camera. I will say that I am leaning toward the Handicam though. I am just waiting until a few brave souls get one and share their experience. I only want a digital camera for email and for those times when a quick picture would replace what would spend a lot of words to explain. I suppose convenience is the other reason - I always carry my Prism - I wouldn't always carry a digital camera. Not to mention those times when I don't really want to draw attention to the fact that I am taking a picture.

That's a good point. Back in the spring, after receiving my Eyemodule 2 as a birthday gift, I took it while on a trip to an art gallery in Washington D.C. I quietely snapped photos here and there.

When I neared the exit to the gallery, I suddenly realized signs saying "No photography permitted." Doh! I wouldn't make a habit of that, mind you. Anyway, nobody noticed I was taking photos because it just looked like I was fiddling with my Visor Deluxe.

One thing I noticed when switching from b/w Visors to my Prism was that both the full 640X480 color pics and the b/w 160 X 160 Palm pics take up substantially more memory on the color Prism than on my older Visors. Don't know if that will apply with the Handycam too.
