Possibly bad news...ISDN is technically limited to the same distances as xDSL (although I've seen ways that can get around it, i.e. repeaters, but I'm not sure how widely deployed they are).

You guys don't know pain until you've connected through an Inmarsat Mini-M satellite phone connection. I think it topped out at 2400 BPS. I could swear I could see the little "1's" and "0's" coursing through the wires. I hope to have a DSL connection at home later this month or in February. It sucks to have a neighbor a few blocks over with DSL and the phone company can't say when it will be available in my neighborhood.

To all of you with DSL or cable, I am green with envy. To the other analog modem surfers like me, I feel your pain.

Lets face it. Being limited to a 56k dial-up is as close as many of us will ever come to experiencing what it must be like living in a third world country.

HEY

When I made the choice several years ago to live out in the country there was no choice. Now there is only one other choice besides dial-up, starband. At $80.00 a month I don't consider that a real option. So at least I have the clean air, lower crime rate and pretty view to occupy me on those slow downloads.

Some day Toby, with a little luck and alot of subsidies Louisiana will evolve into the highly developed and universally respected state that I call home, Maine.

Whats funny is that my town was the first in the state with cable-based broadband. We've had it for close to five years now; the community was a "test bed" for Susquehanna Communications. As I mentioned, my children know not the horrid screetch of a modem in the night.

On my next machine I may not even get a telephone modem. I don't think I have ever used the fax functionality....

Forget the subsidies. Just kill all the politicians.

I use Verizon DSL and its great. No problems, great customer service. I just hate paying the $49.99 per month but its worth it... I guess. It would be even more worth it went back down to $39.99 per month, but oh well..

Dialup seems to be fine for many people for email and general browsing the Web, but for more than causal Internet users, broadband is a must. You can get so much more done in less time with a faster connection.

As a matter of fact, I need a VisorCentral vacation. It seems like I have been spending hours here afterwork every day reading so many responses to my posts and vice-versa. Goodness, I love this site...and I love it even more using my DSL!!!

By the way, http://www.dslreports.com has great forums for anytype of broadband.

@ home I still use dailup.... the $80 a month are not worth the few hours I spend online at home.

In the office we have a fast link. Since I spend a lot of time there waiting for script to finish running I have enough time there to do my surfing...

However my nextdoor neighbour has cable. I'm thinking of setting up a LAN and use his connection

Just don't have the time to set it up...

Do files get embarrassed when they get unzipped?

I suggest getting him a wireless router for his birthday. Tell him how important it is from a security standpoint that he safeguard his machine behind a router....so important you couldn't bear the thought of him going without...

I have Verizon as well ... if they raise my rate from $39.99, they better have a damn good reason, or I'll make a huge stink about it. When I switched from dialup the local rate for Cable or DSL was identical and continues to be; the deciding factor was that I could more easily set up a wire to the phone than to the cable connector to my computer.
